Title: Loss of power after starting. Post by TugW on Feb 5th, 2012, 11:44am My 2.3 scorpio falters shortly after starting. It doesnt respond to the accelerator but keeps running slowly. When warm it runs normally. I replaced the plugs but there was no improvement. I would appreciate some advice Tug |

Title: Re: Loss of power after starting. Post by Tompion on Feb 5th, 2012, 2:10pm This may not be your problem, but just in case: There is an issue on cars with an autobox with the engine running on 2 cylinders when cold. This usually only occurs if put into reverse shortly after starting. My 2.3 has done it for years, I just make sure I don’t have to reverse straight away after the car’s stood overnight in cold weather & I never have a problem. |

Title: Re: Loss of power after starting. Post by Highlander on Feb 6th, 2012, 11:26am What sort of mpg are you getting Tug? Any kind of roar off it under load? If its running ok after warming up and your mpg is low I'd look at the exhaust manifold, they are prone to cracking on the DOHC around cylinder 3 If your rev the engine under the bonnet you may well be able to see exhaust gas escaping round the EGR valve area with the manifold heat shield still in place. Or remove the shield, 6mm and 15mm sockets if I remember, doesn't take long. (I usually leave them off anyway) Failing that try the old favourites... cleaning the throttle body, Idle control valve, MAF, EGR Is it an auto? Here's where they often crack, this one had an attempted repair with some sort of exhaust putty but it really needs welded or replaced. http://i42.tinypic.com/2116kap.jpg |

Title: Re: Loss of power after starting. Post by TugW on Feb 6th, 2012, 5:17pm Thanks Highlander. The car is a 2.3 Ultima Auto. No roar heard. I will look for smoke. How does one clean the items you mention. Can you refer me to some info on that? Tug |

Title: Re: Loss of power after starting. Post by Simmo on Feb 6th, 2012, 5:21pm MAF details are Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm). :) Info re the EGR is Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/egr.htm) Idle Air Control Valve is Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/iacvdata.htm). This needs to be removed and the piston oiled with a fine oil such as 3 in One. To clean the throttle butterfly simply remove the air intakes and manually open the throttle and clean the edges of the flaps with carb cleaner or similar. |

Title: Re: Loss of power after starting. Post by TugW on Feb 21st, 2012, 4:53pm The fault was eventually traced to the Lamda sensor which measures the exhaust gases. It is similar in action to the MAF in that it uses a hot wire detector. This had burned out. Replacing it put it right. Thankyou all for your help. Tug |
