This can happen if the ribbon cable behind the control panel isn't fully latched.

In which case This (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/acmanual.htm) may help.

OK. Next look at This link (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/hbctest.htm) and see what it reveals. Also be sure to do as Tompion says, remove the panel and check the ribbon cable is attached correctly. It is a large plug with two catches which need to be properly latched. Also spray the control knob with switch cleaner while you've got  the panel out. ;)

i had the same problem with the hbc years back changing it with a later one with the plate attached to the heat sink cured the problem the hbcs seem to have two terminals at each end i fitted one from a petrol job to my diesel which only had 3 leads but it worked fine so they seem interchangeable between models location is under the bonnet close to the windscreen sitting on the centre of the heater box held in with 2 self tapping screws -my replacement cost a tenner from a breakers yard 10 mins to fit

Geoff, according Spikies advert, on the front page of our site, he has one at £45. Before you go 'dishing the dosh' have you actually done the tests?. These things have no moving parts and I can't see what would cause a sound of any kind if it failed. I wonder if it might be a fault on the motor. There are a few members in Essex and one of them might just let you try the HBC from their car to check it out or, if you put a post in Parts Wanted one of the guys might have one anyway. :)

My bet is that it is the motor. Read through This article (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=admin;action=display;num=1278660411) by Tompion. It has several references to other posts. The first thing I'd do is remove the HBC and spray a load of WD 40 into the cavity. Unless you 'do a Tomp' and open up the casing that's your only way in. Is the cover over the pollen filters properly secured in place?.  :)
