Title: Re: DTC P0158 Post by Tenfut on Mar 11th, 2013, 7:57pm Thanks Tompion for your input That is the only code coming up so I suppose its a case of leave well alone and wait and see. Fingers crossed Tony |

Title: Re: DTC P0158 Post by amigafan2003 on Mar 11th, 2013, 8:16pm Downstream sensors are there to monitor the condition of the cats, so in theory you could have a broken cat and not know about it. broken cats can affect emissions. |

Title: Re: DTC P0158 Post by Tenfut on Mar 11th, 2013, 10:20pm I had a feeling that might be the case. My scanner is a U380 not sure of the brand and that was the only code that showed. I cleared if then went for a 20 mile blast down the motorway and the code didn't come back. Does that tell me anything? How would I know which (if either) cat is not working. I will have to chance the MOT now as I wont have time to change a cat. Tony |

I played that game recently with a KA of 2004. Motor control indicator showed up and MOT failed although emission were below limits. After two weeks and having cleared the code directly before I drove to MOT station KA passed MOT without problems. Emissions again were well below limits. After nine times travel to work, indicator came up again. This shows me that there is a mismatch in the specification of (downstream) Lambda probes and the efficiency of catalytic converters. In my case the probe warns too early. I think such tolerance problems are well known to every engineer. I assume to prevent expensive legal quarrels in US and high pollution penalties, car manufactures choose the safe side. Regards Armin |
