Title: Stiff steering and int. rear windows
Post by Nunnspoet on Jun 11th, 2013, 8:33am
Well here goes folks:

On my 24valve Estate (The Beast) the steering has stiffened up and the rear door window switches have packed up on the doors - the widows still work fine from the front drivers side switches.  These faults happened at the same time  ???

So my question is: Is there a common fuse or relay related to the two?

She has just passed the MOT in that condition and there are no leaks around the Steering gaiters, and she steers ok, it is just that the steering has got heavier, also you can see the fluid moving around ok in the resevoir.

Mike

Relay12 (shown (wrongly?) as rear door locking) can stop the rear windows working from the rear switches.
Fuse 28 does the same but also stops the sunroof working.

Whether either of these will also affect the power to the sensotronic steering module I don’t know.

I haven’t spotted a link between the 2 problems in the diagrams – fuse 33 is shown for power steering.

The U/J in the column to rack coupling could be seizing up - give it some WD-40 and see if that improves things  ;)

I concur.

How about the switch in the centre-console that isolates the rear windows from child fingers!   The plug came off mine under there with the same result!

This is all good stuff, thank you everybody.

I will be "out there" later on depending on the weather. Can't wait!

And as the saying goes "I'll be back"

I forgot  :-[  :-[, and is  possibly linked:

This Scorp has the "Lock on go" system, which I believe ceased to operate at the same time as the Steering became heavy.

I have lubed the UJ on the Steering but to no avail, and by operating the rear Window Switch on the Centre Console a good few times they now work perfectly - unlike my brain.

The status-quo is: Stiff steering and lock-on-go not working.

I still have to check Relay 12 and Fuse 33, but it's drizziling at present and me no willing to expose the fuses till it ceases.

Stiff steering : Possibly blocked PAS hose, maybe internal collapse or blocked cooler, seized track-rod end or lower ball joint ???
Have you tried jacking up the front end and operating the steering to see if that reveals anything binding ??? Maybe worth changing the PAS fluid ???
Not sure what 'Lock-on-the-go' is ???

Mike. Have a look at the first two entries here (http://search.atomz.com/search/?sp-q=lock+on+go&sp-a=sp100172f5) and all will be revealed. ;)

Very usefull and interesting info. everybody, thanks.  :)

The "lock on go" mod means that the doors self lock at a pre set speed. On "The Beast" this is at 5mph.

I have had a pretty good read of the relevant info. that you sugested Simmo  8) and weather permitting I will check out all conections etc. The VSS is common to both the Sensotronic Steering and the Lock on Go, so that is where I will start - after I have checked the relevant fuses. I just need Summer to return.  >:(, so frustrating.

luckily I have 2x 24 valve Estates so I can test Relays and fuses by swapping them over  ;).

I believe that the mechanics of the Steering are sound as she only passed her test aprox. 10 days ago  8). Though changing the PAS fluid seems a good idea as I have had her for, maybe, 9 years. Got her from Eric R. She's mine all mine - wonder how the Jag is.

I,m starting to waffle so I, clam up now.

If it's not anything to do with 'lock on go', then worth jacking the car up & checking that it's not a strut top mount bearing seizing up  :)

Just back, last Wed. from 2 weeks in Cornwall in my red Cossie Estate which is mentioned in my other current post.

With the return of real Summer weather other, non Scorpy related "must be done jobs" have reared up and as I really like to eat they have to take priority.

So, once again, "I'll be back"!   ::)
