The base/card that the velour is glued to has bowed downwards as well as the velour becoming detached...is this unusual ? would it be a water leak ? cant see how, sunroof drains are fine ? any ideas ....John

Check around the Aerial for leaks they have been known to leak, but I would really have to presume it might be the onset of " old age" .
Ask Simmo he's old and droops occasionally like I do! ;D

John - yep, it's old age taking a hold ;)

Usually it's a combination of years of heat and the foam padding starting to degrade and lose contact with the fabric. IIRC, the headliner backing itself is a kind of glass fibre material and is usually OK.

I've repaired a couple in the past using aerosol contact adhesive, better if you can remove it from the car but you can probably do a reasonable job with it in situ, just be careful because that glue gets everywhere :)

Bruce Hi......its like x2 separate issues...lining has come away but also the rigid backing is bowed ....if I tried to repair it would still be very odd as it is bowed by i would guess 3-4"

so the headlining backing is not ok ....it doesnt even resemble being flat!! rgds john

As Bruce say's, age and heat will separate the lining to the point of a big bubble in the middle or small ones around the roof handles. I found it easier to remove the liner to do the job.
What I did find was that the foam padding deteriorates to a point where trying to re-stick it is pointless as the roof will look bumpy. I purchased a new headlining material with the foam attached and stuck it on with spray glue. Looks a treat if I do say so myself, it's also clean which most headliners are not through smoke, sunroof open etc. Cheers Lee

Aye Lee, they do tend to go bumpy, I was tired when I wrote that post :)

Where did you get the headliner material from if you don't mind me asking?

John, it's been a long while since I did one, but from memory I remember the headliner base is fixed in places around the edge with metal tabs fixed to the bodyshell - it hasn't somehow slipped out of these has it?

Hi Bruce, I bought the headliner from Jim the Trim in Colchester, good price too. He also supplied the spray glue ;)
John, I'd be surprised if it's bowed. You will need to remove it to find out. The headliner itself is not fixed anywhere in the middle, only by the grab handles, front and rear lights and a couple of plastic screws. You will also need to remove the pillar covers front, centre and back. To remove from the car, it slides out of the boot. HTH lee

thanks for the feedback but I can assure you the hard backing is bowed.
I can press the centre and it moves up 2" or so plus the velour has separated hanging down from that. Thanks for info re how to remove..more concerned why its its bowed ..maybe water has got in but where?? a mystery john

A poorly fitting or split drain hose is a possibility.
If you have an estate I assume the rear washer hose runs above it & could leak.

thanks..its a saloon ....maybe i should check the sunroof drains ...obviously no way to check connections without removing headlining or is there ? john

John, the usual method of clearing the drain holes is to use a piece of flexible curtain wire or similar about a metre or so in length and push it down the holes in the corners. :)
