Title: Restoration project - the Y reg
Post by amigafan2003 on Jul 11th, 2013, 10:23pm
I taking voluntary redundancy in two weeks so I am embarking on a summer restoration project for my Scorpio (24v Ultima face lift saloon on a "Y" reg) with some of the cash from the payoff.

I'll be posting here as a log of what I'm doing and how it's going and hopefully the finished article in September sometime.

This is what I'm doing and in the order hopefully:-

Engine:

Fit new waterpump  (completed)
Remove intake resonator box (completed)
New leads (completed)
New plugs (completed)
New drivebelts (completed)

Body work:-

Fit two new outer sills (completed)
Fit drivers side rear arch repair panel (completed)
Paint the above plus boot lid (scratches), drivers side front wing (small thumb sized dent) and passenger side rear wing (poor finish from previous repair and small ding).  (completed)
Possibly do the roof as well as there is a small scab developing - but I might get away with a smart repair on that. (completed)
Recon the wheels.

Suspension:-

Front ARB bushes (completed)
Front droplinks (completed)
Front shocks (completed)
Rear shocks (completed)
lesforjors -30mm lowering springs (drivers side rear spring is currently "droopy") (completed - fitted H&R springs)

Exhaust:-

Cat back stainless system - single pipe.
Replace perished mounting rubbers

Interior:-

Find out why drivers seat wont move forward.
Find out why heated seats don't work.
Find out why interior lights don't work.
Find out why heated screen doesn't work.

Brakes:-

New front calipers (sticking left front).  (completed)

Drivetrain:-

Auto box fluid and filter renewal.
Investigate motorway "vibration (suspected center prob bearing or CV joints).

So - gonna be a busy summer but I hope to get some good pics up for you all and looking forward to Harewood next year ;-)

I compliment you on your endeavour, but wonder why you would want to lower the car?

Maybe amigafan intends to wage war on the speed bump scourge by trimming the tops of them :o he would be welcome down our road where despite local meetings and surveys voting for pinch points, they've installed speed bumps, since when they have installed cast iron bollards to prevent motorists driving along the footpath avoiding the bumps. There is a considerable amount of debris becoming evident, bits of road springs, bump stops, wheel trims, silencers  etc etc.One poor sod with his car trailer full of slabs, bent the draw bar to the extent that the front of the trailer was scraping the road  ::) Ah well, that's progress !!

I just think they look better with the wheels filling the arches more.

Never had a problem with speed bumps in the Westfiled and that's ALOT lower (12cm from floor in fact) than the Scorpio  - just have to go REALLY slow.

Matt's Scorpio has a -30mm kit on it.

Ay she does, a 30mm H&R kit, i only have issues on the really big bumps and when the road has a depression that loads the suspension up,

i cant comment on the lesforjors kit but the H&R made it feel much tighter and less wobbly on round about.

I also like a larger rim with less side wall for better steering response.

Job no.1 complete - new water pump, with a few issues:-

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Advice;action=display;num=1370944304;start=0#8

Details about where to get the water pump from:-

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Advice;action=display;num=1373479654

Going to do the plugs and leads today or tomorrow.  I've been putting off doing it after hearing horror stories about plugs seizing into heads.

A blast of wd40 down the plug wells left over night should help.
Cheers ill try another disk to to see if itd cloning correctly

Well plugs came out easy enough - that's another couple of things ticked off the list.

Plugs that came out looked in good nick :-)

Dammit.  So fixed the water pump and now the abs and tcs lights come on above 15mph.   >:(

Could it be that water has got on to the loom in that area?. Try drying it or spraying with WD 40.

Possibly - I did jet wash it after as well (just exterior - not in the engine bay!).

Might take it for a really long dirve to "air it out" as well - it had been stood of nearly 6 weeks prior to replacing the water pump.

If you jetwashed the front wheel arches you may have forced water into the ABS sensor connectors which are located under there.

The water from a jetwasher comes out at high pressure and could easily have forced it's way in to the connections and if they have gotten damp I'd imagine you'd get the ABS light on.

Just a thought.

The light doesn't come on until after getting to 15mph though.  I thought the initial lights on/lights out test tested the sensors (i.e open circuit).  Then the rolling test tested the sensors being able to sense the rings.

The static test is very basic, you can just short the 2 pins without the sensor connected and the light will go out.
So water in the plug could allow it to pass the static test but prevent a proper signal for the rolling test.

Ah ok - thanks - I'll have a root root round at the weekend :-)

i seem to remember you can get to the front wheel arch connectors just by putting the steering on full lock.

I thought that abs and tcs would signify a rear sensor/connection fault?

Drove daughter to nursery this am - ABS and TCS lights didn't come on above 15mph and same again on way back.

Seems like it was most likely a dampness issue then which hopefully has resolved itself. Fingers crossed!. ;D

Absolutely.

I intended to take photos of doing the waterpump but I forgot!

I'll take photos of the sills, arches etc to show what it's like before and after of course.

Fitted the inlet resonator replacement pipe and cone filter today.  Took it for a short test drive - OMG!  I have never heard a sound like it - you really wouldn't believe the noise it now makes.  Cruising along it's the same but put you foot down and all manner of hell opens up - absolutely epic!

No idea on the affect on power but I don't care with the noise it now makes!

Inner sills needed some work as well but no factors had them in stock so the body shop made them and they stuck the sunroof drain out the boto and sikaflex'd it in place - it had popped back in side the sill previously which is proabaly why they rusted from the inside out.  Outer sills have anti chip paint on them - hopefully they'll last a bit longer this time!  The'y also gone mad behind the arches with sikaflex and waxoil to keep further corrosion at bay :-)

Colour match is bob on.  It's had some paint before (both rear wings, front drivers wing and the rear drivers side door by the looks of it) and they've blended it in really well - better than the place that sprayed the rear wings last time at least!  (I think you can see that in the "before" photos).

I just need to find some sill protectors as the stock one got a bit bent when they took them off - can't blame the body shop = they are paper thin and bonded on with high strength double sided foam.  Trying to work out if these (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-Door-sills-Mercedes-C-W201-190E-Cosworth-/121145889538?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c34db9302) would fit.

Shocks, springs and drop links all replaced!

Drivers side rear still sits a little lower (1cm) than the other side but meh - it's an old car and we couldn't see any damage on the suspension parts so not that worried.

Also did a full clay bar, machine polish and wax today. Shame the sun isn't out today :-(

You can really see in some of the shots (side on especially) the slight pearl effect Tourmallard has - the way it goes from near black to deep green and if the sky is reflected in it almost cyan in colour.
