Title: rattling brake pads
Post by Bobbit on Jul 28th, 2013, 4:50pm
hi Guys,
I have a fairly loud rattling noise coming from the front offside wheel.
If I put my foot on footbrake it stops.
Anybody any idea why pads should suddenly start rattling.
cheers Bob

Have you lost the 'spring clips'?. Are you sure it is the pads? Have they been changed recently? We had a thread on this some while ago. I have a feeling it was Jonnycab?.  ;)

Have a read of This thread (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action=display;num=1302364377;start=10#10) and check out Jonnycabs link in the fourth reply. I knew he was involved!. ;D

The inner pad clips into the piston so that one shouldn't rattle.

The spring clip on the outside springs the 2 parts of the calliper together trapping the outer pad at 3 points – the inner point is the raised semicircular part of the pad which locates in a curved register in the calliper. That should prevent the pad clunking assuming the spring is in good condition.

Thanks for the info guys.
Simmo thanks for link, jonnycabs thread is indeed what mine are doing, clunking and rattling,
tompion all springs and clips were ok when I changed pads 4 months ago.
Will wait till it stops raining and take it apart again.
Will let you know if I find a fix.
Cheers Bob

My brake pads did eventually stop clunking all on there own  ::)

My theory :-  I do think that some pattern pads are not made to original spec & that they are slighly smaller, which allows them to move & clunk against the pad carriers. The reason they stopped clunking is probably because over time, a layer of brake dust most likely built up, which prevented the pads from moving & also cushioned any slight movement.

So when replacing the pads, then it may be advisable to NOT clean all the crud from the pad carriers  ;)

Thanks for that jonnycab, yes its seems logical that is what it will be, I was just worried it was something serious.
Thanks for all your help.

Thought I’d post a picture as it’s difficult to explain what I meant.
I believe there are 2 makes of calliper used so yours may not be quite the same.
There appear to be some similar looking Granada pads (haven’t a clue if they fit) that don’t have the circular raised part on the pad so check that yours have.

The carrier spring pushes the carrier against the pad at the 2 points indicated with the red arrows into the curved register indicated by the green arrow. The pad shouldn’t be able to drop just with gravity. I assume the pad rotates slightly under braking thereby taking up the slack/wear or rides out of the register until it hits the stop – either way it would spring the calliper & carrier apart.
Maybe if it doesn’t work smoothly the arrangement may snap shut after braking. That is of course just guess work on my part. :)
