Title: MOT disaster
Post by Nunnspoet on Aug 20th, 2013, 6:19pm
Well. my lovely red 24 valve estate has failed the MOT miserably.

Both front Suspension arms need replacing as the Bushes have gone. I know that someone on here knows where I can order up some - I think in Gemrmay. Please let me know.

The main trouble is rust. Sills and all sorts of stuff around the rear end. I have left my car with Roger along with the fail certificate as he will give her a really good inspection with a view to assesing all my options tomorrow morning.

That's about it for the moment.

Very down

Mike

The bushes can be replaced or is it the ball joints?

Rear bushes are bolt on, (Ford or pattern ones available on Ebay). Front bushes press in. The car needs to be sitting normally before tightening the bush centre nut.

Many thanks.  :)

Got it wrong  :-[. Its the ball joints.

I did expect the rust problems, but maybe not so severe. The ball jionts were a suprise.

I will wait till tomorrow before I say any more

Thanks again

Mike

Think I might have a spare pair of front arms in the shed, used but OK.

No 'shed' jokes from Simmo or GOZZ please...

:). Sounds good to me Mike. And, if I remember corectly you live not far off the M42. Send me a price mate.

Boy, I feel better this morning having read your replies  ;D. Great stuff.

I will be back later - when I get the news from Roger.  I seem to have two options:

Do whatever is necessary to pass the MOT this year

Have a proper job done. The owner of the MOT station recons she is a lovely car and worth doing up. He recons up to a grand and I would have a great car for the next five years or so. Sounds good. We are thinking about it.

Sounds a distinct possibility to me-if it is that good I'd go for it.
Good luck

What a day yesterday was.

Roger's verdict: Scrap her.

Carol's ( my wife) decree  ::). I want my car fixed  :-X

I remember it is her car.  ::)

Consultation with Roger: Ball park figure of up to a thousand pounds.   :o,  :'(

Me: Ain't got it.

Carol: We will do it somehow,  :-*.

Result: Roger is pricing up.

And that is about the best way I can explain yesterday.

So we will see.

Best regards

Mike

Mike. The sill issue and wheel arches,if they are a problem, can be solved by the use of parts from the earlier model with minor mods. Mine have been done. If Scorpio Mike has the suspension bits they're a straight swap over. Good luck. :)

This link (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cracks.htm) may help and indeed offer a crumb of comfort! ;)

:). Thanks again Simmo.. I will pass on your advice. Might print off the relevent bits---- Aagh! but then I don't want to appear to be teaching my Grandmother how to suck eggs. I'll suss it out  ::).

Snoopy, ain't it strange how hope rises and falls along with excitement and trepedation.  And all over a car  ???. But then, What a Car.. not just a car but a 24 Valve Scorpio Cosworth Estate.

Mike

Mike I agree.... I still regret selling my Scorpio. If I had the room to have kept it I would never have sold it. I think its gone now and it really was in super condition WHEN I sold it.
I sometime think of buying another, but I could not afford to keep two now. I have the memories and a few pictures to remind me.

Mike,

The Mk3 Sills will fit or at least they will on the saloon.

For the 2012 MOT I had inners and outers plus 2 wheel arches, also repair panels for the Mk3 fit with a little work.

Very happy with the result. Needed two small bits of welding this year also, but happy that having bitten the bullet last year I now have a good solid car.

Putting a thousand pounds into such a repair is a tough decision to make and even though they are appreciating at the moment as they become more scarce its future value may not justify it, but you have the use of it and would have to spend a significant sum to get a car that is as complete.

Good luck!

Geoff

Thanks for your encouraging words Geoff

Well my garage friend has now told me that the sub-frame is really bad, besides sills etc., and that he is not prepared to do the work as with the amount of welding required the job would entail a huge amount of stripping out of the interior and electrics, also brake pipes and fuel lines - it just goes on. He is only a small business and plainly has not the room to do such a job

So she is parked on the drive. We are really loath to - well we just dont know what to do at the moment.

I am cat sitting in Swindon for the next few weeks ( I have "The Beast" with me) so everything is in limbo.

Our feeling is that the 24 valve Scorpio suits our needs perfectly and as these 2 cars are up to scratch, engine and transmissiion wise etc that it is just a crying shame.

Not much else to say at the mo.

Keep Scorpying

Mike

Well I'm looking for a project of you decide I get rid of it. I'm really after something to keep me busy at weekends, so let me know if you decide to sell it, it will go to a good home.

Regards
Matt
