Just trying to replace rear springs. Undid n/s shock absorber and lowered and understood spring would "just fall out" but it is solid and wont budge. Anything else to dis connect to allow further lowering?

Thanks for your reply. I have looked at this method but I am sure I read somewhere on the site that the springs could be removed without following the "Ford route" I seem to remember someone (maybe Johnnycab) had been successful with an easier route that didn't involve removing the exhaust and drive shafts.

Mine is a 24v and I don't know if it has self levelling suspension or not. How can I tell?

I have given up for today and will wait to see if anyone suggests an alternative.

Self levelling only on estates Tony. AFAIK.

Hi Tenfut...... I indeed replaced my rear springs on my saloon (with heavy duty ones) a few years ago & it wasn't that daunting ;)

You don't have to remove the exhaust, driveshafts or evap canister. Follow the link in Simmos post, but ignore steps 1-3 & just start at step 4.
Once everything that needs to be unbolted is unbolted, then you should be able to push the trailing arm down with not too much effort & pull the spring out.
I think that's just about it......Good luck :)

P.S....good idea to keep a jack under the trailing arm to keep the spring from suddenly forcing the arm down when you unbolt the last bit.

P.P.S.... If your putting brand new springs in, then you may possibly need some spring compressors (claw type) to get the new springs in :)

When self levelling was fitted to the saloon,the rear shock absorbers had rubber air bags at the bottom of the body and an air pipe in the top section,these were charged by a compressor fitted behind the front bumper on the nearside,this was switched via a load sensor under the car body with a ball jointed rod attached to the offside suspension arm,your car will have the little ball on the arm,I think they all did at build.A relay in the aux fuse box completes the circuit,to lower the suspension there is a little dump valve in the top of the compressor which operates via the sensor when weight is removed from the car.
