Title: Replacing Air bags for M.O.T
Post by ro284 on Nov 7th, 2013, 10:41am
As i understand it, from my MOT man, The time will come when all Air bags will have to be re-newed at some point, at the time he did not know when this would be, So i am wondering if there is any news on this? i dont trust my 18 year old air bag to be of much use now, and hope not to test it, i would imagine the cost of replacement air bags, to comply with MOT requirements  would be more than some cars are worth! >:( Any news on when this may be a requirement for MOT?

Found a few comments about this online:

"I'm sure that I recall seeing recently that airbag expiry dates are a legacy thing anyway. When the things first became common, the manufacturers just didn't know how long the pyro packs would remain good for and added an EOL inspection / replacement to the service schedule at around ten years.

Ten years later, inspection of removed objects showed no degradation in pyro pack reliability and the replacement requirement was quietly removed."

"In fact motor manufacturers (led by the SMMC) started lobbying for the airbag change to become an MoT requirement (they had ££ signs in their eyes). To its credit Government asked for proof it was required, so 10+ year old cars were purchased and crash tested. To the amazement of manufacturers they found no degradation of the airbag performance. The lobbying stopped"

You won't have to renew them for inspection. It's not even safety consern, 'cause when it comes down to need for the bags with Scorpio.. The crash will probably kill you anyway.

Even better, if the pyrocharges don't work anymore.. they can't explode. -> They won't trigger airbag light, which would obviously be a MOT failure.

I believe the Scorpio to be a well structured vehicle.
It's in German but see here: just before two mins into the clip. http://youtube.com/watch?v=SJcLpO0uRxY

The Banger racers use them for a good reason.

Don't fancy my chances in any of these. The VW bus is scary.
