Title: v6 operating temp!
Post by ro284 on Dec 10th, 2013, 5:27pm
Can someone tell me what the correct operating temp should be for a v6 please. at the moment after trips around town, mine is 132 degrees (fans running) as read from the speedo button, Too hot or too cool for winter?  heater very good at that! Thanks Bob

Hi Bob

Is that the reading or have you done a conversion? The reading isn't in degrees.
From http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/instreset.htm

"When the temperature gauge needle is horizontal the display should read between 79 to 129
37              Maximum temperature
57              Bottom of red chaplet
79 to 159  Middle of Normal band
242            Middle of blue chaplet
255            Bottom"

The higher the reading the lower the temperature.

When the needle on my 2.3 is horizontal the temp is around 190F - if I remember correctly the 'stat is 88C so what you'd expect.
Long time since I checked via OBD but I think low fan was about 200F & both fans something like 210F.

Unless the stat is playing up the temperature on mine stays the same regardless of the season.

Thanks Dave, i thought that reading was degrees! :-[ i have scrapped the failed fan switch in rad, and fitted a Kenlow controller instead, the fans on low speed set to come on when the needle is just above horizontal, Which seems to work well with the 88c stat, thanks for that info, Bob

Bear in mind 132 on the display isn't 132c or 132f - it's just an arbitrary number between 0 and 255 fed into the ecu for fueling caslculations.  It just has 256 address spaces and the temps are mapped to those addresses - likely -40c to 120c - and it probaly isn't a linear mapping either - i.e. values 245 to 255 might cover the whole -40c to 0c range, but values 150 to 244 might cover the 0c to 30c range where it needs fine resolution for calculating required fuel for starting.

EDIT:-

I see Tompion has already explained it :-)
