Title: Wishbone ball joint pinch bolt Post by misch on Jan 18th, 2014, 11:37am Hi everyone, I need advice ....trying to replace front wishbone right now, got the car on the jack, and as always a problem occurs, ...cannot remove bal joint pinch bolt from the carrier, did remove the nut, bit the bolt is stuck ...so my question is do I just hammer it out from the side od the nut, or it needs to be unscrewed? Tnx Misko |

Title: Re: Wishbone ball joint pinch bolt Post by dave44 on Jan 18th, 2014, 3:55pm Replace nut to within a couple of turns from tight. Place over size nut on top. Spray with WD40. Leave for10 minutes. Now try with sharp blows with hammer. This should" break" bond between metals. Slacken nut acouple of turn and repeat until bolt is loosened. Advise replacing with new bolts. |

Title: Re: Wishbone ball joint pinch bolt Post by misch on Jan 21st, 2014, 2:51pm Thanks for the advice...but unfortunately I haven't managed to remove the bolt, I don't know if I'm to gentle with hammer or it's really stuck too much, so I think I'll pay professional do this for me this time :(...i'm afraid I'll brake something if hit harder... |

Title: Re: Wishbone ball joint pinch bolt Post by PJDavis on Jan 21st, 2014, 3:26pm Are you sure you've followed Dave 44 advice to the letter? This usually works with the toughest of customers! Get a rag and soak it in WD40, aye really wet. Wrap it around the whole pinch bolt/ball joint area and leave overnight. Next time you come to the job, have some 'Rost-Off-Ice' (look it up ebay) and give the whole area a good spray with Rost-Off. Leave about one minute and then do Dave 44 suggestion. If that don't work, it's gonna cost you a good deal of money! Don't be afraid to hit the pinch-bolt with the nut on it, good and hard with a lump-hammer or a heavy copper mallet. |

Title: Re: Wishbone ball joint pinch bolt Post by Tompion on Jan 21st, 2014, 4:36pm I knew I'd seen someone had to drill it out - it's in this link about changing the strut: http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/frontsusp.htm http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/16%20drill%20in%20action.jpg As it happens he didn't need to take it out you can leave the hub carrier & wishbone in place when changing the strut as long as you can slacken the wishbone pivot bolts so as not to strain the rubber bushes & only tighten them once the car is lowered. |

Title: Re: Wishbone ball joint pinch bolt Post by gozz on Jan 21st, 2014, 7:48pm It is quite amazing how some judicious heat from the 'hot spanner' makes the job so simple 8) I could never be without it,particularly when I ran lorries which needed to have parts cut out of them. |
