Title: Whats this?
Post by rob_reznik on Mar 8th, 2014, 5:20pm
OK I could trawl through the pages and look but I thought it would be quicker asking the question -  I'm having a few issues with the Climate control system and rad fans come on and off whenever they feel like it so need to investigate further - I'm assuming this part is broken but could do with knowing what it is to help with buying a new one :-[ ? I drove the 120 miles back when I purchased it and the temperature gauge was going up and down and there didn't seem to be any control of the Climate Control System.

Just want to add this website/Forum has to be one of the most comprehensive I have seen for any vehicle - it has been a wealth of information - well done!

It works the recirculated air flap using vacuum from the inlet manifold. If you reconnect the hose you should see the arm move when you start the engine. If you then press the recirculated air button on the climate control you should see it return. Even with a hole rusted through it may still work as long as the diaphragm & chamber are still intact.

Great thanks  :) - will see if it works but if not too expensive may fit a new or good used one - I'm going a long way in this vehicle and better to get things sorted over here as I can't get parts over there

Rob,that unit is not really important and won't affect the operation of the system,as Tompion says it only shuts off the fresh air entry.
Your car has a cooling fan switch in the offside of the radiator which controls the big green fan relay down behind the offside headlamp.
The fans virtually never come on whilst driving with the aircon off and the temp gauge should remain reasonably steady just under half way.The rise in temp could be due to a faulty sender or sticking thermostat, these are both cheap items which can be bought from a motor factor or Asian motor store.

Cheers - when connected the vacuum does actually work and if I had a option would prefer fresh air from outside - fans are still coming on and temperature gauge comes right down to the blue - I have a new thermostat to fit tomorrow - which sender and thermostat are you suggesting to replace? - are the relays also unreliable and could this be the cause? temperature has never gone above half way the problem is the fans coming on too soon and staying on.

I had exactly the same problem with the temp gauge when I bought my 2.9 12v.
Changed the thermostat (found to be stuck partly open) with no real effect.
Then changed the temp sender and bingo. Rock steady gauge since.

Changed thermostat and fan switch today - warms up quicker and no fans coming on ;D - all sorted - many thanks
