Title: 24v coilpack firing order
Post by Andycan on Mar 22nd, 2014, 12:35pm
Does anyone know the 24v coilpack firing order?  I can't seem to find it in the tech stuff only the firing order and not sure which is which on the coil but from what I do remember the leads to my coil seem out of order.

Andy.
I cannot answer your PM,it says invalid or on 'ignore list'.Matt or Dave2302 will know the answer, they are devotees of the 24v.

Hi,

I have answered your pm, and in addition 1&5 should be  on the left of coil as you look at it, (drivers side of car if RHD), then 2&6 then 3&4.

1,2 & 3 are to the rear of car on the coil pack and 5,6 & 4 to the front.

However, this may differ on the Mondeo coil pack.
When I looked at "borrowing" the coil pack off my V6 Cougar to test try on the Cosworth, the LT connector was a different type of plug, so I didn't bother, and young Gozz kindly sent me a good 24V coil pack to try, Cheers Gozz  ;D

Get a Ford TIS disc off E of the Bay, the wiring diagrams also have connector information, including pin numbers etc........................Very useful disc   ;)

Looking at the wiring diagrams here:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=admin;action=display;num=1268901956

If your coil pack doesn’t have the same layout as a Scorpio one. It appears to be a wasted spark system - 3 coils firing spark plugs in pairs.
1&5
3&4
2&6

With the ignition off you should be able to test with an ohm meter to find the linked HT terminals.
Whilst it doesn’t tell you which go where it does mean you only have 6 ways it could connect instead of 24.

Having 2 random leads crossed may make it fire on 4 (I say may as switching the 2 in a pair should have no effect) whereas having 2 pairs crossed means it'll only fire on 2 - so it should be easier to get it right working in pairs.

Thanks so is it right that the drivers side sparkplugs are 1, 2 and 3 working back and the n/s are 4, 5 and 6?
I am sure I was told it was the other way around  but then my memory loss is very bad lol.

@ Dave I looked on ebay for Ford TIS disc but there is nothing there.

Thanks everyone

You fixed me up with a TIS disc a few years ago Dave,it was an absolute boon, however we changed from XP to 7 and the disc no longer works.I recently bought another one from a bloke on ebay, asking him if it would operate on Windows 7,he said it should do,but it didn't so I sent it back to him.Your original is still with me and could be passed on to someone with XP,viz Andycan possibly.

Hi Gozz I am using XP at the moment but your disc should work on Windows 7  but having said that everytime they bring a new operating system out they say the old programmes work on them but don't.
I will take the disc off your hands if you let me know how much you want for it and the p+p.

It may work with virtual XP.

re the disc
I got one off e-bay and it does not work on windows 7 in XP compatibility mode nor in virtual XP, at least I couldn't get it to work.

Yes it is wasted spark, and Cosworth and Duratec firing orders are both the same

With the ignition off you should be able to test with an ohm meter to find the linked HT terminals.
Whilst it doesn’t tell you which go where it does mean you only have 6 ways it could connect instead of 24.

You don't need to do this, they are all linked in pairs front row to rear row like this:-
  ------------------
   (x)    (y)    (z)

   (x)    (y)    (z)
  ------------------
It is just the LT connector that may differ in it's pin outs  ;)

Having 2 random leads crossed may make it fire on 4 (I say may as switching the 2 in a pair should have no effect) whereas having 2 pairs crossed means it'll only fire on 2 - so it should be easier to get it right working in pairs.

It doesn't work like that, one is a 12V Ignition + ve   and the other 3 are - ve triggers from EDIS Module on the Cosworth, from ECU on Duratec..............

This means if + is in the wrong place it won't run and if any pair of the 3 triggers are wrong it will only fire on 2 cylinders ;)

HTH, Regards

Dave

Sorry I misread it I thought he was asking about the HT side which is what my post referred to ::)

Thanks on my coilpack the leads are 1-5  2-6  3-4 which seems odd but as I said might be a different coilpack.

Andy,

That sounds correct, from left to right as you look at it, the HT leads go 1 , 2 & 3 on the "rear" row and 5 , 6 & 4 on the front row................

Front row and rear row can be swapped if the order remains the same, and it will still run, but makes the leads untidy  ;)

HTH

Cheers Dave
