Title: It won't start - 2.3l Ultima
Post by BrianC on Apr 12th, 2014, 6:54pm
Can anyone help me with a little problem with my 2.3l Ultima Auto Estate.

I have just replaced the Inlet Manifold to solve a split in the water space behind the Thermostat. When I had the  manifold out, I noticed a number of problems with the Engine wiring loom so replaced a number of the wires. Having put it back together, the car starts but immediately stops and won't restart unless it is left for a while. I have checked the wiring and there are no shorts or broken wires. There is power to the coils and there is a spark. I have checked the odb2 for error codes but there are none. When turning the engine over and resting my foot on the brakes, the peddle moves suggesting there is some vacuum in the inlet manifold. Has anyone got any ideas what could be wrong and what to check next?

Thanks all, Brian

Sounds like an air leak - check and double check all the vacuum pipes that you had disconnected when you replaced the manifold or pipes that you might have disturbed.

I assume you used a new inlet gasket when refitting the manifold?

Could be fuel, did you use your injectors & regulator or did the repacement manifold come with injectors & regulator.

I did use new gaskets but it is possible one isn't seated properly. There isn't much space to see what your doing. I did keep  the original injectors and regulator so that should be fine, unless there is a vacuum leak where they go into the manifold.

Thanks for your help. Looks like I may have to remove the manifold and start again......

I think you’d be very unlucky to dislodge a gasket from its recess.
I don’t really see why it would start then not start again because of an air leak.
I assume the PATS light isn’t showing a code.
A couple of problems I’ve seen reported were a hose getting trapped (I think under the EGR fixing) & the engine breather getting dislodged under the exhaust manifold – it’s the other end of the hose at the back of the inlet manifold that connects with a right angle rubber boot – the easy way to test that is to just plug the hole at the inlet.

Given that you’ve found bad wires you’re quite likely to have problems with others you’ve disturbed, the wiring to the idle air control valve is a possibility as that’s important with a cold engine. Although you’d expect a code for that, did you check for codes on the enhanced tab of obd2?

Isn't there a wee one-way valve between the Servo and the Inlet Manifold?   Is it working?

I'd think that if it had a vac leak it would run OK at higher revs, like if you held the throttle a bit.

A shot in the dark here, but is the idle air control valve actuating?

Does it start and run if you hold the throttle open a bit?

Hope this helps,

Bruce.
