From the symptoms and fault codes that I'm getting, the time has come to when I have to rewire the gearbox loom. At some time in the past there were pictures and procedure on the site showing how best to go about getting at the loom, posted by somebody who had done it, but I can't find them now. Can anybody advise me?

the loom runs along the top of the gearbox and connects into the engine loom, you may get enough access if you drop off the rear gearbox mount and allow the gearbox to drop down a bit

Thanks Matt, I've had a look underneath today to refresh my memory and re-read the gearbox manual on the site. At the very least, I'll have to remove/lower the exhaust and remove the heat shield which will be a bit of a can of worms with an old exhaust. I'll think about it as I don't need the car urgently and I've got two other cars to play with. Although the scorp is in good condition, it's awkward without a hoist or pit so I may call it a day. Do you have to disconnect the prop-shaft?

Update: The very helpful guys at my local auto-box specialist have offered to swap the loom for the cost of a couple of hours labour if I provide a replacement, which is a no-brainer really. I'm putting a request on the Parts Wanted list.

Update: I sourced a second-hand loom on eBay. Insulation was a mess as expected so I checked out continuity with site info and wiring diagrams and then rewired it pin-by-pin by cutting back to as near the connectors as possible, soldering & using heat-shrink. Re-checked continuity, then wrapped it in insulation tape with a final covering of heat-resistant aluminium tape. All that, took me about 20 hours. Took it to very helpful local auto-transmission guys who swapped it for cost of 2 hours labour and changed the transmission oil. End result - no fault codes, car saved and now smooth as silk for a total cost of less than £200.
During the course of all this, I gathered all the relevant loom connector pin-outs and wiring colours into a single-page spread-sheet if a moderator would like to contact me and put into the How-To section.

Good job brds on saving your Scorpio - labour of love these cars but nothings impossible when you put in the hours :-)

And thanks for detailing the pin outs for the benefit of all future forum users :-)
