Title: 2.3 Sump Removal
Post by PJDavis on Mar 23rd, 2015, 12:58pm
I have a '98 2.3.   The sump is a good bit rusty, and probably could do with a change.   I have a brand-new sump-pan, so will the sumps change over without lifting the engine up?   I'm thinking about any oil-pickup too?  Any help with this appreciated.
Peter

Personally I don't think you will have enough clearance due to the oil pick-up dipping down into the sump.
Either an engine out job or if you can support the front of the car securely and hang the engine from either a support bar across the inner wing rails or from an engine crane you might be able to do it with the engine still in the car by dropping the crossmember to which the engine, steering & front suspension is attached to. Obviously you would need to disconnect any steering or suspension components attached to the crossmember.
Take care to use adequate support stands & strong chains to hang the engine on as you will be working underneath a rather heavy lump of metal.

I've done something similar on a 4x4 Sierra - you basically have to install the engine from underneath and then install the crossmember, suspension etc...
