Hi hopefully a simple question. I believe i am having fuel starvation issues as the pressure on the fuel rail down. My pump is a bosch 3.0 bar and i am not sure if it should be higher. Can anyone please let me know what pressure fuel pump should be fitted to a 2.9 V6 EFI ??? ??? ??? Have changed the fuel filter already. Another symptom is that when i turn the ignition on and try to start her - no chance. If i leave the ignition on for a few seconds and then try she fires up immediately but dies within a few seconds. Any thoughts other than the pump.

I think the fuel pump pick-up tube has a mesh filter on it - possibly partially blocked ?
Is the fuel pump noisy ? If so, could be worn motor bearings.
Pump is in the top of the tank so you will need to drop the tank to check or replace the pump.

Sorry, i should have said, the pump is external, new. I changed the old pump and filter suspecting a problem but the new pump is 3 bar and i still have problems, should it be 4 or 5 bar ?

Have you removed the old pump or just fitted a new pump in the fuel line ?
If you installed the new pump in the the fuel line you would be sucking fuel through the old pump and filter which could be partially blocked. Do you have power to both fuel pumps and are trying to use the new one as a booster ?
Bit more info needed as to what your setup is.

Hi, this system is in my Royal Sabre kit car which i completed earlier in the year. I fitted a new tank and the donor vehicle external pump and external filter. All worked ok initially but then as i started to use the car a bit more, faster and on hils, she lost power and was pinking like mad. I have changed the pump and filter for new now but have the problems described in my first post. If i leave the ignition on for a while she will start and run for a few seconds. If not she will not start. ALSO the pump, which was sold to me as the correct pump, is 3 bar and i suspect is not the correct pressure as this pump does not stop running after a one or two seconds with the ignition on, which the previous pump did. Ah ! OK, so the car is not a Scorpio but a kit car with a Scorpio 2.9 V6 EFi - is it the 12v or 24v version ?
Looking at a few fuel pumps on ebay it would seem the correct fuel pump for a Sierra with the 2.9 engine runs at 5-bar - maybe that is what you need.
From a safety point the fuel pump should stop after a few seconds if the engine is not running - normally controlled by a relay - this will stop high pressure fuel being pumped in the event of an accident in case the fuel lines are damaged.

Mike, it's the 12volt. I did not appreciate the importance of the cutoff switch so i have ordred one which i will fit with the new 5bar pump I am about to order. I will let you know how i get on. Thanks for your help.

Hi everyone, sorry for the delay in closing this post but litterally forgot once i had my problem solved, appologies. Eventually after trying all sorts of bits and parts I must admit I gave up and consulted an expert in fuel injector systems. I posting this solution for anyone who has spent a long time restoring a grannie, or any other engine for that matter, as it could effect them. It turned out that my injectors were all partially blocked. Apparently, as i had been building my Royale Sabre, i refurbished the engine first before installing it onto the chassis and then built the car around it. Of course i started it and ran it often but effectivly stale fuel was lying in the injectors all the time and, as the build lasted years, caused the build up that clogged the injectors. Anyway, we are on the road and running great now but hopefully this may help someone avoid the problems i have had.

There could be another issue, the rubber supply line from the pump to the top of the sender unit perrishes and allows fuel to leak back into the tank. Normally you wouldnt notice if you pull the FDU out the tank as itll only leak under pressure
