Title: I need some advice to get my scorpio ready for MOT
Post by ben24v on Dec 20th, 2015, 4:44pm
Hi guys and girls, I picked up my Scorpio today and I've got a couple of jobs to do.

The first is cleaning, I'm ok with that, that's the easy bit.

The second is refitting the exhaust manifold heat shields, they came in the boot.   I don't have enough bolts it seems so first question is do I buy these from ford? Second question are these the right type? I appear to only have 3 so I'm missing 5.

Next question

I have 225/50/16 tyres currently fitted, I need to replace them for the MOT.   I've looked at the prices of these and they are ridiculous! Having searched the forum I've found mention of people using 205/55/16, the prices of these are much more reasonable. The question is what do you have on your car (size and brand/model)?

Thanks Ben

What brands of tyre are you looking at and what prices have you been getting ?
Just took a look on blackcircles and although the 225's are more expensive than the 205's as you would expect, the price difference does not seem that large.
Are you looking to replace all 4 tyres at the same time ?
I always had 225/50x16 on my 2.3 Scorpio when I was using it - brand I think was Avon the last time I bought any.

225 50 r16 on mine too Ben. Michelin on the front, Nankang on the back. Just what I got a good price on at the time. I did have 205 55 on for a while and they were ok but did look a bit thin. I always felt a little less confident in the handling but never had any issues. Most probably just psychological. I kept them for the whole life of the tyres, just changed up a size when they got replaced, so couldn't have been that bad :)
All the best,

The bolts look to be the right type. Someone may know where to get them other than Ford.
All my scorpios have always had 225 50 16 tyres of whichever recognised make was available and best price at the time. The Michelins seem to have lasted well, as did the Pirellis.

I'm thinking about getting Uniroyal Rainsport 3 225/50/16 92 load y speed for £80.23 each.   Its a shame this size is a bit rare compared to 205/55/16 because the same tyre is £60.59 each so £80 a set more...but having said that 20mm extra at each corner must be far better when it comes to braking.

I just rang Bristol street ford in Birmingham and they say the bolts I'm looking for aren't available anymore.   I'll have to look else where.

Anyone got some knocking around?

Try http://www.fordpartsuk.com - they deal in a lot of obsolete Ford parts.
Also worth asking your dealer to do a check for any stock held by other Ford dealers - some parts guys are more helpful than others, spme will check anyway, others need to be asked.

Thanks for the fordpartsuk link,  I've found three more in the box of spares but I'm still 2 short.

Pretty sure those were the last tyres I bought for my Scorpio - very pleased with them too.

Thanks guys, I'm trying to find some 17" cosworth softline alloys at a good price. Weighing up my options, 225/45/17 tyres are the same sort of price (actually they are £30 a set cheaper) and I think it would look ace on slightly bigger wheels.   I'm not a fan of obviously modified cars but I think OEM upgrades are nice.

I've got some time to mull it over and see what happens

I swapped my 225/50 tyres to 205/55 - the ride is much better and they tramline much less.  Wont be going back to 225/50 tyres again.

I've tried all sorts of Tyres, Avon ZV5, Pirelli (never again), Hankook, (They're ok) but the best I've tried on both the Scorpio and the Jags is Nexen.   Medium priced that performs well in wet and dry, gives good wear as well, and I don't hang-around.   I don't like anything slimmer than the 225's, and have gone up to 225/55 by 16 and those clear the inner wheel arches on full-lock, just!   The car will definitely NOT take 225/60's.   Try Oponeo  online for the Tyres.   If you do go up to 55 aspect ratio, get a hard-walled Tyre, or the car will roll-over a bit more.   I think I was about £65 each Tyre delivered to North Scotland.

Looking for tyre size site and found this site,  http://www.etyres.co.uk/how-to-change-your-tyre-size/    If you change from normal size it effects the rolling radius.

Yep I'm fully aware it effects the rolling radius, I'm a Mechanical-Engineer.  In my opinion it doesn't effect it adversely, in fact My speedo reads slightly more accurately now (comparing to Sat-Nav) and it hasn't changed the characteristics of the performance that I notice.   I informed my insurance company, LV, and they weren't really interested saying that as long as the tyres were within certain parameters, and weren't drastically improving performance or a safety issue, they were ok.   It's all a matter of opinion and choice, I'll be sticking to the slightly larger aspect ratio for now.

Thanks again for the input. I've found that camskill sell tyres very cheap and I'm thinking 225 50 16 uniroyal rainsport 3 are a reasonably priced performance tyre. Camskill deliver tem for £245 then I'll just have to get them fitted. I've decided against fitting different wheels now to keep costs down and just enjoy the car.

The minimum work to get the car on the road is tyres, one flexi brake hose and radiator recore. That's about £500 so not cheap

Oh yeah and I once had pirelli P6000 on my mk2 golf gti and they were the worst tyres I've ever had. You couldn't pay me to use them!  They are like driving on ice in anything other than a hot summers day. I only bought them because I had pirelli p-slot  alloys on the car

Going from 225/50r16 to 205/55r16 is 0.16% difference - less than 1mm.

Yes,  I've used blackcircles.com before and tyresonthedrive.com who are the closest competitor. They sell the rs3's for about £320 fully fitted which isn't too bad but camskill do them for £245 delivered and I'll get them fitted for less than £85 easily.

I'll have a look at f1 too

tyreleader is cheap but camskill are cheaper, £165.56 delivered for 205/55/16

I'm going with 225/50/16 but haven't hit the order button yet

Title: Re: I need some advice to get my scorpio ready for

I bought the uniroyal rainsport 3 225/50/16 in the end

The next job is change the brake flexible hoses, I'm thinking about braided but haven't found any at a good price.

The "normal" type I have found have two different lengths for the rear. I haven't checked yet but I'm wondering if it has two front hoses and four rear. It would explain why the braided hises kits are so expensive

I fitted some HEL ones to my previous Scorpio. Can't say it made a lot of difference. Yes 6 hoses in all.
I had to modify the 2 hoses on the back that go between the body & suspension. Whether mine were assembled with the wrong fittings I couldn't say - they needed a flat on the bosses that located them in the brackets.

Title: Re: I need some advice to get my scorpio ready for
Post by GrahamT on Jan 29th, 2016, 12:59am
Yes Ben, 4 hoses total at the rear end.

Ha, you beat me to it  ;)    Yes, from what I remember, there were flats on mine, they seated nicely in the brackets.

Fairly sure they are the same as Mk3 Granada & Sierra.

I'm going to buy some Pagid hoses from carparts4less £46.06 delivered for all 6 hoses. I think the braided ones at nearly twice the price are overkill

I've rang a couple of places this morning trying to get my radiator repaired. It seems the cores are difficult to obtain now and I was quoted £300 for a new radiator or £280 just for to recore mine.

I could do without spending £300 to be honest

I know someone of you guys use the 2.3 radiator but it worries me that its smaller and the reason this one needs replacing is because it has bulged.

I'm shocked at the prices of radiators, I'm used to spending about £125

Title: Re: I need some advice to get my scorpio ready for
Post by Tompion on Feb 1st, 2016, 7:21pm
Bulging of the rad is a common problem with the 24v but not everyone has the problem. It's not unusual it seems for it to keep happening on the ones that have had the problem.

Does anyone know if the 16v & 24v radiators cores are the same and the only difference is in the plastic end tanks ?

I have a brand new spare 16v radiator for a manual car - maybe the core could be fitted to 24v ends ???

I've decided to buy a new one, the tanks and gearbox oil warmer/cooler will be old now anyway.

The one guy told me they are different thicknesses too

Title: Re: I need some advice to get my scorpio ready for
Post by ben24v on Feb 4th, 2016, 2:39pm
I've paid fastrads.co.uk for a radiator but they rang me and said they can't get one.

They might be able to recore it, if I post it to them.

Not sure what's going to be the answer yet

Not sure, I'm going to ring fast rads tomorrow and see if they can get 16v rads. They said they would try to repair mine but I'm not sure I want to go down that route as the plastic tanks are quite old now anyway

What about this site   http://www.adrad.co.uk/prices/prices.php?id=FD466&model=SCORPIO&make=FORD not sure if thats cheap enough. Your tanks should be ok and if there has been 50% antifreeze there should be no damage to the cooler pips.

Yeah adrad is ok price. I've had trouble getting a  radiator as companies can't get them anymore. Fastrads.co.uk can't get them, I've just had a refund from them.

I'm going to city radiator services tomorrow morning, I had quite a promising chat to them just now

Don't know where you are located Ben but there is a company in Tunbridge Wells called Bryan & Sons who do radiator repairs & re-cores - I went there a while back to get a Sierra radiator re-cored and he was working on a load of vintage stuff !

That's great guys. I'm getting closer to being ready for mot. Unfortunately I keep finding little things that are holding me back.

I had a battery debacle today. Carparts4less list the wrong type of battery with square terminals (097) so I did some research. I found other companies listing 096 so ordered one from eurocarparts.com and returned the 097 at the same time. 096 have the correct terminals but are about 10mm too tall for the strap.  After waiting another 30 minutes in the que I finally got the correct 100 type battery,  it was the cheapest out of the three at only £41.

No need for two wires to sensors it use the block as 2nd wire ... i.e. earth.
Just like the temp sender lower down that only has one wire!

It looks like a suppressor, a capacitor for suppressing radio interference. It will earth through the block it is bolted to, as mentioned already. They probably used a 2 pin connector as they are more common, hence cheaper. I'm not sure mine has got one, I just don't remember seeing one. Probably the reason my radio has always been a bit poor!

I'm so excited for tomorrow morning I've only ever driven the car on my drive, hopefully I won't have any nasty surprises.

Wish me luck

It passed... The bloody windscreen cracked in the bottom corner on the way there but luckily it wasn't a fail. The speedo doesn't work until I hit about 65, overdrive off light flashes constantly and it bangs into 2 gear. I hope the lack of speedo explains the gearbox issues,  any ideas?
