Title: 24v water pump remove & replace
Post by Tenfut on Nov 13th, 2017, 11:57am
Good morning chaps.

It looks like my 24v water pump has developed a small drip although I suppose it could be dripping from the small hose to the thermostat.

I am losing about an egg cup full a day at the moment so not too bad but in my experience leaks never get better.

A few questions:

(1) I bought a used water pump from a fellow member about 10 years ago, is there any way to tell if this is in good working condition?

(It is the right one)

(2) Does the radiator and / or fans need to be removed to do the job?

(3) Is it possible to do the underneath part using "Halfords" type small ramps to raise the car?

(4) Is it advisable to use "gasket goo??" or just put on dry?

(5) How long should the job take for a novice?

Any advice from anyone who has done the job would be much appreciated.

TIA

Tony

The two pumps are certainly different Have a read of this (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=admin;action=display;num=1427231556) which might help re the design. The 24v thermostat is totally different from the 'normal' ones, is expensive and, I am told, really difficult to change as the hose goes through the body of the engine.
If the pump came from a member then it should be the right one but the pictures in the link will soon confirm.

This second link Here (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=admin;action=display;num=1271188428) might also help identify.

If you look at the Coolant Manual (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/coolingmanl.htm) for the 24 valve that will tell you all you want...or don't want .....to know!

Thanks Simmo, it is definitely the right pump I just wondered if there was a way to check it was OK.

I changed a waterpump myself, here are my thoughts:-

(1) I bought a used water pump from a fellow member about 10 years ago, is there any way to tell if this is in good working condition?

Not really.  It should however turn with minimal effort or noise.  There should be no "rumbling" and there should be almost zero play in the shaft.

(2) Does the radiator and / or fans need to be removed to do the job?

I just removed the fans.  OFC, be careful that you don't puncture the rad if leaving it in place.

(3) Is it possible to do the underneath part using "Halfords" type small ramps to raise the car?

That's exactly what I did.

(4) Is it advisable to use "gasket goo??" or just put on dry?

I just used a new paper gasket and fitted it dry.  Beware though, the gasket may weep until the engine gets up to temp and the gasket "sets".

(5) How long should the job take for a novice?

Two to three hours - assuming all the bolts come out!  I recommend a good dose of penetrating fluid the evening before on all the bolts.

One gotcha to be aware of, the left hand belt tensioner needs to come off as it blocks access to one of the pump bolts.

Thanks amigafan

Did you change the hose that goes from the pump to the stat and if so any pointers for that part?

Forgot to add, has anyone got one of these hoses spare in good condition? No longer available from Ford.

Try Top Boss, in Mansfield, 01332 347406, they made a couple of hoses for my 24 valve Scorpio Estate.  Tey are very helpful.

Thanks Mike, did you have to send them the old one as a pattern or can they make from part number?
