Title: door locks
Post by exucasvu on Jan 9th, 2018, 3:17pm
Does anyone know where I can obtain new door locks and keys for my 2.3 97 Ultima estate? Are there locks for other fords that will fit? Many thanks.

Sounds a bit drastic! What exactly is the problem?  ???

I have been having constant problems with door locking and opening for a while now. Remotes work some of the time and not others, only one key will open the passenger side and all keys will lock any door. I have reprogrammed both remotes and keys but the problem always comes back.
Basically I am left with a situation where if the one useful key fails to unlock the passenger door then I am truly up a gumtree. I know there are kits out there but would not like to tackle building a new lock not being savvy.

Is there a wet fuse-box?   I'd also be checking batteries on the remotes.    When anything sometimes works, that points to problems outwith the actual area of problem.   Dampness and cold have a lot to do with problems with cars, I have both in North Scotland, so have had these problems.   Try a nice little 'air-heater' in the car overnight, safely of course!    It's amazing what works in the morning.   Like the stereo display, which doesn't work in my car from about October through to March.  :)

SO, there's hope for my 7000 radio display which works partially and occasionally? Even had a full screen once, with the heater on!

Any good fixes for this if you dont live in Scotland? I still play cassettes you see.

Firstly, if you haven't done so, read This (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/doorlockbld.htm)  It could be something as simple as the key is too worn to operate the locks. ANY Ford key of the same type will LOCK a car.  Have the 'good' key read and obtain a new one and see if that works.

The next step is to replace the door lock (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/doorlockrep.htm). If you follow the articles it is fairly straightforward. Often your 'friendly' Ford dealer will rebuild the lock for you when you buy the kit.

The one point I would make about the lock shield removal is to do with the bolt hidden behind the small flap in the cover. Once you have levered the flap open cut the d**n thing off. IF you forget to do so and replace everything you'll find the window won't work because you left the tag sticking out and now it is fouling the window lifting mechanism!! :'(   You could tap it back in place but why?  ???

Talking of dampness, I notice that the car gets very damp inside during a cold night. The inside of the windscreen can get a lot of condensation so I wonder if this may have something to do with the door locking problem. I too have intermittent work/wont work with the radio and sometimes the menu that displays the fuel consumption/ outside temp etc.
A couple of years ago, I had mega problems with water ingress which turned out to be a hole in the base of the battery platform. Had that fixed but wonder if all of these irritating electronic symptoms may be a throw back from that. Will do as you say Simmo with the key and if necessary will change the locks.

Alan. Have you checked the passenger foot-well for dampness? The battery side fuse-box cables pass through the bulkhead, behind the glove-box, through a large rubber grommet. If that is not fitting correctly water can run in to the car, over the CCM, and onto the floor. Do you have a battery cover fitted and are all the drain holes clear on that side and below the main, drivers side, fuse-box?

The other thing to check are the pollen filters. If they get wet due to a poor fitting cover it will have the same effect. ;)

Pollen filters (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cabinfilters.htm)
Drain holes (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/drainholes.htm)

Simmo
I am grateful for your advice. I have checked the drain holes on both sides and they are clear. I do have a battery cover and the area beneath it and the adjacent fusebox are dry.
I am struggling with the advice about the pollen filters because this  may well be the cause of my problem. However, the area around which you are talking about is covered with what looks like heavy duty tape which I suspect may be a replacement for a cover? I am enclosing a link to my one drive folder which I hope will work. The folder contains the images that I am referring to.

That is indeed the area concerned. All I can suggest is that you remove the tape and see what it is covering. If you look at the link I put up you will see that the cover should be held in place by 4 spring clips as it says in the text. Photo 3 gives the best view. One clip is in place whilst the other has been removed. Just check to see what state the filters are in, that will soon answer your question. They should be dry of course. I say THEY because there are three filters in there, not just one big one. :)

I have some spare pollen filters if you need a set.

Am now waiting for some replacement pollen filters. Meanwhile, I have been looking at earlierr thread about dampness which had a link to this picture:

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/blower03_small.jpg

Mine is in the same rusty condition and in fact has a small hole where the rust is shown in the picture. It was described as a vacuum motor but could someone tell me exactly what part this is and its function? Is it something to do with the air conditioning? Could there be a link between it and dampness in the car and if so should it be replaced? By the way my AC has never functioned so I always keep it switched off.
Best regards to all

Alan. Is This what you mean? (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/blower03.jpg)

Looking at your post I think you've missed out the = sign in the first set of brackets. Should be [url=]  ;)

Sorted for you. ;)

If I remember correctly it operates the flap for outside air/ recirculated air to the inside of the car so if it has broken you will just get one or the other but I forget which one lol.

With the engine off the recycle flap is closed when you start the engine the flap opens.
If you look at the centre rod before & after starting you should easily see if it has moved.
With the engine running you should see the rod move when you turn recycle on/off - mine shuts with a clonk I can hear inside the car.

As long as the diaphragm inside the case is OK a hole in it won't matter.

Quite right, mine is absolutely rusted to bits, but still works fine!

Yes it is Simmo and thanks for sorting it out. Looks like its condition is not something to get too excited about.
