Can anyone please give me some info on the Camshaft position sensor.
The engine is vibrating and not giving in full power,

I get the error code P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor A circuit (bank 1)

The wiring to the sensor is bad, if I touch the multiplug the engine, rev’s drop.
I am not sure if it’s the wiring to the multiplug, the plug itself or the sensor or all.

I would like to replace the sensor, multiplug and section of wire going to the plug.

I would like to know
Is the CPM sensor obtainable and can is it easy to fit?
Can I buy the multiplug with a short section or wire attached? Last year (with the help of the forum) I got a TPS multiplug with the wires already connected and it was easy to solder onto the existing wiring.

I could not find any info on the main site.

Car is a 2.0 16V

Typical wiring problem with the loom at the top because of heat. The wires will be all 'crumbly'.I bet the sensor is ok its just the wires. I think I might have a spare sensor, if not, Roy has a few. I would think your whole loom is goosed, (not good news I know) this will be the tip of an ice-berg. Sorry to give bad-news.

Thanks for the info, I think you are right. Most of the loom did get replaced two years ago. When I say replaced, it was not a proper job. I got a guy to service it and the wires broke trying to change the plugs. he cobbled a rough loom together using a Corsa loom. If its not the sensor, I think it the connection to the multiplug as the revs go up and down when I touch the edge of the plug.

Is the connector part of the sensor ?

let me know how much you want for the sensor ?

The sensor is easy to change.
These plugs will fit (also fit the coilpacks), hunt around if you want them with tails:

uk.rs-online.com sell the same type & here is a more compact version similar to the ford ones, however you need to order the seals & terminals separately:

Make sure the wires haven't been trapped under the back of the coil cover or rubbing against the stud near the sensor.

For testing the engine will run quite happily with the camshaft sensor disconnected - I can't tell any difference when driving.

I replaced the CPS, multiplug and quite a bit of the wiring but the car is still the same. Can anyone suggest what I should look at next. I cannot connect the ODB2 cable untill late next week

Difficult to say without checking for codes.
Did you try running without the cam sensor connected?
The wires should be twisted but I haven't a clue how important it is if you didn't do it.

The symptoms are typical of a failing coilpack - which probably won't give a code.

If you still get a cam sensor code if it were me I'd run the 2 wires directly to the passenger footwell & splice to the wires from the PCM - you could go through one of the spare entries in the bulkhead grommet - the advantage is minimal disturbance of the cooked wires in the engine bay looms & you reduce the cable run by close to 3 meters.

I did try running it without the cam sensor connected. Should the car run normal with it disconnected ?

Although I allready had the cam sensor code, this all started after going over a bump.

The engine will run on 2 cylinders - badly of course.
Try disconnecting 1 pack and starting the engine.
Next try the same with the other pack.
If it runs better on one try swapping them over & see if the problem moves with them.

If it is a coilpack in the early stages of failing closing the plug gaps may help as a temporary measure.

Sometimes with a bad pack you'll find the cat gets hotter than usual due to unburnt fuel.

I now always carry a spare pack - over the years I've had 2 fail on this car & 2 on the previous one. Twice it's happened pulling up at a junction - fine when I stopped, running on 2 when I pulled away.

Last one I bought last year, I picked up a new genuine Ford (bosch) one for £25 on Ebay. Try searching with the ford part no 6485688, you'll find pattern ones for about that price.

The car is is Norway (my wife works there ). I think I will take over a coilpack when I go next week as I need to get the car sorted so I can book a boat to get it back for its mot in May.
Do I need any special tools to fit it and is is easy enough for me to do it?

Ten bolts on the coil cover.
A connector & 2 bolts on each pack. There's a lead going from each pack to a spark plug, the packs sit on top of the other 2 spark plugs & sometimes need a bit of a tug to get them off. I think they're torx bolts holding the packs but I don't know the size.

It's not unusual to find oil in the plug wells, if the ends of the coil packs are oily mop out what you can around the plugs.

It's easy enough, should be fairly obvious.
