Title: Refitting Driver Airbag
Post by FlefasaurusRex on Apr 7th, 2019, 5:48pm
Hello all,

Today I replaced the steering wheel with a much nicer one with the wood trim, however I can't for the life of me get the airbag to go back properly. The torx screws go in fine but the bottom of the airbag doesn't sit properly and sticks out, then when I think I've got it right the horn is permanently pushed down. Also how does the yellow airbag wire route through the wheel, it keeps getting wedged between the airbag and the horn plate/center nut and just pops off when I try to reposition it.

Any advice/diagrams greatly appreciated!

Difficult to be precise without a wheel in front of me but this may help.
Look at your old wheel, at the back as well as the 2 airbag holes there are 4 other holes. These have plastic rivets pushed in from the front & hold the horn plate(?) in place. If the person taking the wheel off accidently put the torx driver into these it can dislodge the rivets which can cause the horn to go off. The rivets just push back.
I think the yellow wire comes through a big hole under the centre bolt. Although the plug fits the bag either way, there's a lug on the wheel that can lever it off when you press the horn - the lug I think is bottom left - put the plug on the way that avoids it.

Thanks for the pointers. After lots of frustration I figured out what it was, whoever had removed the new wheel managed to bend the horn plate so that the airbag wasn't sitting correctly. Swapped the horn mechanism from the old wheel and hey presto, went on first time!

Buuuuut now the airbag light is blinking, joy.
