Hi All,
been getting an embarrassing/irritating issue with the box recently. Always when using for 1st time on day when pulling out of the drive.

As I pull away it doesn't always move into 2nd gear until I'm hitting 3000rpm.

First encountered this years ago in winter and found that the fluid was on the 'low' mark - topped up and problem sorted.

Now the fluid is at 'max' level, nice and pink, smells ok and no bits. After the 1st bump into 2nd gear it behaves beautifully for the rest of the day.

Car coming up to 22 years and has just hit 110k and hasn't had a fluid/filter change. A very knowledgable mechanic suggested the filter may be blocking up and/or fluid needs changing.

He also recommended a local (& well known) local autobox specialist (https://www.wavertreeautomatics.co.uk/). I called them and explained issue and guy said it sounds like it needs a rebuild costing close to £2k. :o

Hi Paul,

The filter looks right but probably a rubber type gasket - the Ford one is cork with little steel inserts each side of the bolts to stop the gasket squeezing up too much. I have a Vaico one ready for my next oil change as the Ford ones have got so expensive.
I use Comma oil, like this (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2X-Comma-Fully-synthetic-Automatic-Transmission-Power-Steering-Fluid-Oil/192699331707?hash=item2cddc6747b:g:HvEAAOSwWrxb5Dgj)

It could be a loom problem but worth trying an oil change, quite often if the filter needs changing it will be slow going into reverse.
I see that filter has a new bolt, the original Ford bolt is too long for the later Ford filter & presumably the same for this, but either way make sure the bolt doesn't bottom out or you risk stripping the thread or the filter not sealing.

I totally agree with Dave above. I also wonder when the last time the MAF sensor was cleaned? The MAF sensor can have all sorts of effects on the engine and gearbox. Clean with a high-pressure 'carb-cleaner' (smells like thinners) Don't be tempted to try and scrape or wipe off any of the muck on the very thin filaments inside the MAF, but they are best very-very- clean.

MAF gets regular cleaning. Good point about reverse gear Dave - reminded me that it occasionally fails to engage reverse when cold.

I'll get the filter sorted and see what happens.

Just thought I'd update:

Had the filter & oil replaced by recommended local Autobox specialists (Wavertree Automatics). They used Ford parts and it cost £180 total. No problems since. :)

Now that is good news Paul. And the price lookd pretty fair to me, the Autobox takes a lot of fluid.

Very pleased for you, good info. Surely the specialist pumped all the fluid out, what they do is turn the engine over without starting, and suck it out the dipstick tube! That's what the Yanks do, I watched a specialist do that in Austin Texas to a 'Crown-Vic'.
