Title: 17' soft spoke wheels
Post by theogrenietis on Mar 3rd, 2020, 10:28am
I recently purchased a set of 17 inch RS soft spoke wheels for my scorpio. Any suggestion on tyre size? The wheels came with 225/45 17' but the tyres looked wider than the rim. Which is the best alternative for comfort and looks? Has anybody gotten this dilema before?

If you look under alloy wheel options on the site (under specs I think) they list all tyre sizes suitable for the full range of wheels  to suit the Scorpio

Hi
You'll find that the 17 inch wheel with anything bigger than 225, with an 'aspect' ratio any bigger than 50, will rub on the left-side first on right-lock.   The 50 aspect ratio is too harsh for the Scorpio in my opinion, the 45 is positively deadening!   I'd stick with the wheels designed for the car, I used to drive my Scorpio really quite hard, getting a nice tail-drift in the dry with a heavy foot, and the Scorpio handles very well and predictable on it's standard wheels and tyres.  Remember the insurance implications as well?

Thanks for the tip about the wheel rub, this exactly the kind of advice I wanted to hear. I'm from europe, so as for the insurance - I can do what I want  with my wheels.
I was thinking of 215/45 17 tyes, because I want the tyres to be a little bit narrower. Let's hope I won't loose all the comfort scorpio has to offer.

45 aspect ratio will be very harsh.   Too harsh in my opinion.

Check your rolling radius on the different size tyres as they may make your speedometer read incorrectly.
Also ensure you have the same size tyres on each corner as different sizes may upset the ABS system.

If you study Tompions link you will find the tyre sizes and wheel offset (the "E" number which I think is the offset in Millimeters (0.0397 inches for us ole timers) for your scorpio.

The tyres will be very expensive on rims that diameter, and as peter has said very harsh ride quality as a result probably making it an uncomfortable scorpio to live with.

As Mike has said check your rolling radii to make sure all tyres are witing 2"% variation or you will upset the traction control (if fitted) abd certainly the abs system, I had odd sizes on mine for a short while, as the set came in with a car we purchased, it was fine without the traction control but threw up lots of lights etc on my cosworth saloon.
