Title: keys wearing out Post by Nunnspoet on Jan 29th, 2022, 9:02am Good morning all. The keys for the Ignition and possibly the Barrel are badly worn on Ruby my Cossie. I am wondering if I can take the Barrel out of my spare Cossie and put that one into Ruby. A straight swap? Mike ::) |

Title: Re: keys wearing out Post by a900one on Jan 29th, 2022, 6:52pm Cant see y not but you will have a odd key, only fit that door. Try a new key cut for the old lock, may be better. Have you got a fob programed for it. I think it may be not that simple to get at he old lock I think there is a sheld over it. Gerald |

Title: Re: keys wearing out Post by Torbayboy on Jan 29th, 2022, 10:19pm Hi mike, The key's got a chip this ties in to the ring around the barrel area on the steering column, that tells the pats system the right key is in the ignition so the engine can turn over and start. The whole lot are "locked" together, and as you know if the pats dont like you, it ain't going nowhere. What you need is a new barrel and key with the chip in the same as your original chip. This then matches what the computer needs via the pats to let the motor run. They are sensitive to it all matching.I do have a complete set here that came in with movvy, drop Peter a line and see if it can work that way, only trouble anty was a 2 litre I think, this would be a complete swap out of computer pats and lock with pats ring, he will now for sure. Generally the key is designed to wear so the lock doesn't. Do you stil have the beast?? pinch the lot from there, or as Gerald saays try a new key, they're only a tenner if they dont have the chip done, there is a way around this drop me a line. Others on here are more together than me on this, so I may be corrected!! I'm still a child thought :'( :-* :-* :-/ :-[ :P ::) ??? 8) |

Title: Re: keys wearing out Post by Snoopy on Jan 30th, 2022, 8:43am Building a new lock is relatively simple. It must be as I did it on my scorpio. Just need to be careful and methodical. |

Title: Re: keys wearing out Post by Nunnspoet on Jan 31st, 2022, 8:15am Wow, thank you everyone for your prompt and very, very helpful advice. I did build a new lock years ago, in The Beast, I think, I hope, as I still have The Beast as a spare parts source: The water pump being one which Graham Toye fitted for me recently and is going strong :) The weather is pretty poor at present but as soon as I can I hope to swap the locks over. In the meantime I will consider my options as received from this super site filled with people who have a far greater knowledge and expertise than meself. Thank you very much Mike 8) :) |
