Title: Adding front foglights to a Ghia-X - what relay?
Post by DavidBE on Jul 1st, 2023, 12:32am
Finally back in a state when I can go back to a puzzle from some months ago ...

When I finally got round to replacing my damaged front bumper back in Feb, I noticed that the wires were there to plug into front fog lights even though the Ghia-X doesn't have them. I decided that if it was easy and cheap I'd like to add them. (Yes, i know people don't think they are any good for use, and in the 13 years with my 2.3 Ultima saloon I think I only ever turned the fog lights on 3 times, always just for the rear ones. Maybe it's to kind of make up for the 'new' front bumper being the face-lift profile version - correct for car - but not the Cossie version of that the car should have.) So I did a search right back in this forum for all front fog light threads, and gathered I should just need the front fog lights, the indicators to go with them, the light switch version that includes front fogs, and a relay to go in the R9 slot in the main fusebox.

Shortly after that somebody put up five pairs of the front fog lights on eBay for under £10 a pair including bulbs, and then 5 pairs of the indicators also for less than £10 a pair. Checking there was a light switch with front fog light position also available at a reasonable price, I bought a pair of front fog lights, a pair of the indicators, and the light switch. When they came, I checked all the fog light and indicator bulbs were working (they were), then replaced the non-fog light indicators in the bumper with the fog lights and indicators, and replaced the no-front-fog-light light switch with the front fog light position one. I then checked that the side-lights, dipped headlights, main beam headlights, rear fog lights  and indicators were still working, which they were. No front fogs yet as no relay.

Which is the problem. There's nothing in the handbook saying what relay goes there - not even the colour, as is given for some other relays. In a number of the threads here on the front fog lights over all the years, the OP asked for what relay is needed, like FINIS number, and several times the question is then repeated by others in the thread, but in no thread I found is the question answered - except in one thread only, someone says "I think it's brown". The Ford OEM parts catalogue (e.g at 7zap) appears to say it is FINIS 6184475, but searching on that got me nothing - all the Ford relays e.g. on eBay only give the other, longer Ford code. The photo of a Scorpio fusebox on fuseandrelay.com has a white relay in R9 ... but that may be a non-UK one, and I gather Scorpios for some non-UK territories have different front fog light relays (including one under the instrument panel that UK ones don't use). I ended up doing a lengthy search of all Ford relays on eBay, looking through all the right size and pin pattern for R9 and ended up with 3 possibilities:
1 A white relay with the long Ford code 88AG13L028AA but which the eBay photo showed sitting on top of a Ford box saying 6184475 on the label - the ONLY place I've found that FINIS anywhere. Colour matched the relay in R9 in thefuseandrelay.com Scorpio main fusebox, so I bought it, fitted it in R9 ... no front fog lights.
2 A brown Ford OEM relay with the long Ford code 96FG14N089AA. Bought, fitted ... no front fog lights.
3 A brown Ford OEM relay with the long Ford code 85GG14N089CA. Bought, fitted ... no front fog lights.
As I was by then going back into a bad phase for my back and leg pain and brain fog, I ended up putting my original no-fog-light-indicators and original light switch back and leaving it.

But while I can focus again briefly I'd like to solve this. Which IS the right relay for R9? (Annoying that I had one for 13 years in my previous Scorpio but never had a reason to look.) And if at least one of those relays above is right, why else might the added front fogs not work? Is there some other component needed?

Have you had a look at the wiring diagrams? There might be some clues in there.
The wiring diagrams are available for download.
Good luck.
The wiring diagrams are available n the " how to do " section of the forum.

Is there a fuse for them.
