Title: OBD2 Interface from Germany?
Post by markbloke on May 20th, 2004, 2:00pm
Hi,
I'm hoping to become an Ultima owner in a few days  :) thanks to having my Granny written off the other week.  :(
I've been looking at OBD2 PWM interfaces and found this one on a German website, delivered to UK for the equivalent of just over £58. Given that it's based on the ELM320 chipset is there likely to be much difference between this and any other interface?
Seems to come with some software too though it doesn't specify what!

Hi markbloke,

I just had a look at the website that you linked to and the device looks like it may work as in the datasheet for the ELM320 i.c.  it mentions Ford by name.  However it seems expensive when you consider that the i.c. can be bought from elmelectronics ( http://www.elmelectronics.com/ )  for $16.50 CAD i.e. £6.72 sterling.  The circit seems to be quite a simple one with just the i.c., two connecters a crystal and a few passive components. I am going to order a couple of the i.c.'s  to see if I can design and get one to work.  I will let you know how I get on.

Cheers John.

Hi Vman,
Cool, I'd had a look around for the chip but didn't think of ordering it direct from elm!  ::)

I should imagine the J1962 OBD plug might be a sod to get hold of. I guess it's something you wouldn't use every day so a bodge might be possible.....
I found a PC ATX power plug was a dead ringer for a Pioneer stereo molex on my last car - who knows what's possible!

Sounds like a plan anyway, keep me up to speed!

P.S.
Found this which details some problems encountered by others in building this interface: Transistors (http://www.scantool.net/forum/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=538)
Comes from the same supplier of interface parts covered in this thread elsewhere on the forum: Scantool.net Thread (http://forum.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Problems;action=display;num=1081884418;start=0#0)

Hi Markbloke,

I'd say go with the lead from www.obd-2.com since lots of members use that. The big advantage is the Vehicle Explorer software - if you have any problems with the car then you can simply post a scan and the experts will be able to take a look.

We have just bought in bulk from www.obd-2.com, they work out to £60 each! (depending on US$ rate!)

Hi markbloke,

I've found a few suppliers of J1962 connectors and I am waiting for pricing info at the moment.

Regards John.
