Title: gearbox fault codes
Post by blondy on Apr 3rd, 2005, 7:32pm
hi, i have recently replaced my gearbox with a seconhand one and since then it would not hold o/d if you put any load on, so i switch it off.  the revs dont alter when i do this and as a result of this i am getting about 16 mpg if i go easy. also when accelerating quite hard through the gears they tend to slip when getting to about 4500 before changing up to the next one.

i  read the codes on friday and the result were as follows:
P0151
P1151
P0161
P1405
P1761

I have read the descriptions of what the codes mean but am still unsure of what i need to do to fix them.
the P1761 refures to the gearbox and wondered if this cauld cause the problems that i am having with it?

can any body explain these codes a little further than the brief description given in the error code list http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/codes.htm

thanks in advance for any help or advice given.  ???

P0151 Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor circuit out of range - Bank No. 2.

P0161 Downstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Heater circuit fault - Bank No. 2.

P1151 Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 2.

P1405 Differential Pressure Feedback Electronic Sensor circuit Upstream Hose.

P1761 Shift Solenoid No. 3 Performance

are you sure that the fitter of the 'new' gearbox did not unplug some sensors...ie cat sensors as the codes are referring to rough running  hence 16mpg

before condeming the box P1761 states shift 3 solenoid may be duff, get the engine sorted. route around for some loose wires or rubber pipes unplugged. follow all connections beside exhaust and cat..you never know.

hi, i am pretty sure that i reconnected all the wires back to there original locations but its worth re-checking, before i changed the box  i had two sensor fault codes but when i removed the left hand manifold i noticed a crack virtually all the way around it, so i welded this thinking it would cure the faults and failed emissions test. i have just MOT'd it and it passed the emmisions (just) but i dont know what component p1405 refers to or where it will be on the car, cauld you shed some light on this also is replacing the ss3 going to be a diy job for me or will it be payout time? thanks for your suggestions so far  :)

hi there

p1405 is refers to the egr system. maybe a hose off or blocked? see http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/egrmonitor.htm

Blondy,

Are you sorted yet?  How did you get on with the EGR tubes?

not yet, i had alook at the two rubber hoses that link the egr to a metal tube bolted to the exhaust manifold and they both looked fine, is there another reason for the p1405, or maybe it needs a more thorough investigation. thanks i will keep on it.  :-/

Blondy,
If you've checked the hardware tube and both the plastic sampling tubes to the EGRVR on the bulkhead, you are sure the tubes okay, they are not loose or kinked, then you might then suspect the EGRVR itself.  It has been known for the EGRVR to pass rationality checks but still be faulty.

You could try swopping with another known to be good, or buy another from a scrapper and try that.
