Title: HELP with Error Code !!!
Post by RON on Apr 11th, 2005, 3:21pm
Hi ya All,
Just had a scan done on the motor, and it has come up with the code P0171  System too lean Bank no 1.
Can anyone enlighten me, as to what needs to be done, and what does it mean!!!  Is it gonna be an easy job, and will it be an expensive one?
Cheers in advance

Cheers Nic,
Well i'm just trying to rule things out on my motor, i've just had a new gear box fitted, and a new solenoid, and STILL the over drive light comes on, so today i had the MAF cleaned, so i'm hoping this could of been the prob, but the scan came up with this error code before the maf was cleaned.  So myself and the garage(who have been great) are just trying to rule all possibilties out.
Lets hope it's not anything major!!!

Ron,
the Fuel Monitor is explained on http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuelmonitor.htm

The DTC fault recorded means that both the Long Term and the Short Term Fuel Trims (LTFT and S(R)TFT have maxed out without being able to achieve the desired combustion.

Were there any other symptoms? Often this may be accompanied by a P0133 (HO2S11 slow response).

If you datalog the HO2S sensor 11, LTFT and RTFT you will be able to confirm that the trims exceed their preset limits, and the HO2S will be flatlining.

The cause of this DTC is likely to be the fuel pressure.  The INJectors are inputting too much fuel and the fuel trims cannot lean off the mixture enough to get the fuelling to switch.  If the garage has a fuel pressure meter, check the fuel rail for Bar2 pressure and if it is too high replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Regulator.

This is discussed in http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/obd2scan6.htm - however, in that case the maximum Fuel Trim parameters were not breached - it's just that the HO2S sensors were flatlining.
