Title: A couple of fault codes
Post by jonnycab on Oct 25th, 2006, 3:44am
A friend of mine has an S reg 2.3 GhiaX estate.

I plugged my Autel Geniscan into his car earlier & it came up with 2 fault codes.

P0135 & P1131 which surprised me, as I didn't think the autel could read codes over P0999.

Obviously they relate to the pre-cat oxygen sensor....I think....a bit new to this OBD stuff. ;)

I didn't clear the codes as I wasn't too sure when they were logged (he's only had the car since April, so work may have already been done & codes not cleared).

Should I clear the codes & wait to see if they re-appear, or should I advise him to get the pre-cat sensor changed?

P1131 Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 1.
P0135  Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Heater circuit fault - Bank No. 1.

Clear them and they will most likly re-apear, especialy the 135.

Basicaly the heater element in the pre-cat lambda sensor is not working for some reason ( or has done at some time ) The ECU measnure Current draw on the heater circuit to determin if the heater is functioning or not.

It could be a wiring fault, but more likly the heater has failed.

I had this on one of my rear sensors.

If the code comes back then you need to unplug the sensor and test the heater circuit continuity.

If it's open circuit then time for a new sensor.

the 1131 is probably a product of the lambda taking a while to naturaly heat up.

You could swap the front and back lambda and see if the fault transposes giving a P0141
