Title: I would like a code reader...
Post by petehull on Mar 13th, 2007, 9:15am
I would love to buy a code reader for my family cars, I have my 1999 2.3 Scorpio, my wifes 2002 1.8 Focus and my daughters 2004 1.4 Fiesta.

I have seen the OBD2.com site in the USA and have tried to find out what to buy, there hasn't been much help from there so I have been reluctant to follow it up having been ripped off in the past when buying things from over there.

I would really apreciate any advice from anyone who has bought such a scantool including What to buy, Where from prices and any other information available.

Hope someone can help

Pete ???

Yes that's the site, it's the ELM 323 usb interface with computer software to use on my redundant laptop... at £69 I think it should do the trick :D

hi there

jc, that could be a very handy site for members. a nice wee cheap scanner making it easier to point you in the right direction sometimes. only issue i can see is that some issues need more than just the code. in fact, some issues log one code, but really it's pointing to something (like in the case of a faulty fuel pressure reg). somethings you need the live data to work from.

same thing, just about with the elm 232. i've never used one, but the major thing with most of us using VE from OBD-2.COM is that we can share the scans and all see the live data, not just the error code(s), if any.

The latast adventures :P

I Hooked it up to my car today, set up the connection and did a scan, there was no problem reading and soon a list of different peramiters was displayed.  Don't understand it all yet but no doubt as is usually the case I will learn a bit about it eventually.  There were no fault codes detected and some things were "Not supported by car" will list these soon.
You can read four different sensors live and can choose the ones you are monitoring, it is also possible to record data on the fly and then read it back for analysis, looks interesting and impressive, will have a go when time permits. ???
I don't know if there are people out there who are interested in my babblings but I will keep updating incase there is. ::)
