Title: OBD newbie advise please
Post by timduffy7 on Mar 28th, 2008, 4:59pm
Hi could anybody help me with advise regarding starting with OBD. I have never used this before. I would want to use it with a fairly new laptop --no serial port--- USB port yes-- As far as I can gather from reading on this site I will require from Alex Pipper a Triscan cable $240. Plus a USB adapter at $12. If I buy this I would get the software included. Aparently it will arrive through my door all Tax paid. This sounds a little confusing, as I have ordered a starter motor from the US before. It cost alot less than the above and I had to pay Tax plus £12 to DHL for admin. I have tried to ring Alex at the number on there site (no response)
I would  appreciated if someone who knows the ins and outs could email me there phone number so I could have a chat.

Thanks   Tim

Hi Tim,
I got mine for PC with USBs. Contacted Alex by email - easier. Never bothered phoning. (They also seem to take a lot of hols  ;) ) The cable arrives in 10-14 days, from memory you pay import tax (about £8 I think) and its delivered/held by post office.

With the cable comes instructions and an access code so you can download software over internet. To get it running, follow instructions on this page.

Whether you want the PMW, ISO, TriCom or TriCan leads is personal choice depending whether you want a simple scan upto more sophisticated scans for practically all cars.

Once you get it scanning you can get advice from site and even send your scan to other members that also use these leads for further advice.

hi there

yes it is complicated (as in figuring out what a code really means), but not that bad.

as paul has said, you can send the 'live' data to other members to have a look at. this function is nearly as good as being at the car!

have a read of all the obd pages on the website.

Thanks Scorpio
Looks like I'll order Trican from OBD-2.com  even though I'am not sure if its what I should be ordering.
Could anyone tell me if its possible (with cable and software to change the ignition timming from say  6 degrees BTDC to 12 degrees BTDC.????

No you can't alter timing with these leads, although you can observe the timing etc.

Thanks Tompion atleast I now know I can observe the timing. Do you know if theres anyway of me advancing the timming in a controled manner. I'm guessing the ignition timming at 6 degrees BTDC. I'd like to be able to advance it to about 16 BTDC, in 2 degree steps.
