Title: EEC IV Code Reader
Post by philgood on Mar 29th, 2008, 4:19pm
After having several electrical faults with my 2.9L 12v 1995 (M reg) Ultima in the past and some still at large, I would like to interrogate the OBD system, but after reading the information on this site I’m getting a bit confused ???

Am I correct in understanding that I cannot use the OBD II via a laptop on my car and can only use an EEC IV Code Reader thing with flashing lights for restricted tests?

Also one of the posts here explains that some one is building up diagnostic units + ABS test units, are these still available?

I have never seen or used one of these before and I am wondering what sort of results this would this give me?

Is there anyone local to me (Harlow, Essex) who has one of these units, and understands the results it would give, who would be willing to check out my car for me?

You are quite correct in assuming that the codes for the 12v version of the Ford Scorpio can ONLY be read by a star reader or similar .... Hopefully there will be someone close for you to get them read.
You have to remember that it only reads codes that are stored in the memory of the EEC.

What problems are you experiencing?

1.      Over 2 years ago: - All the ignition lights would switch back on after the ignition key was removed! Remedied by auto electrician putting a switched feed from one fuse box to the other, I have since stripped/checked both boxes with no faults found. (Car still has this temporary repair fitted).

2.      Several months ago: - Brake lights constantly on & no cruise control! Checked looms behind dash & running back to the rear light clusters them selves, no faults found. (Brake light would go brighter when brake pedal actuated). This fault magically cleared but did come back once last week!

3.      Several weeks ago: - ABS warning light on all the time! Checked all wheel sensors & ABS module plugs no fault but now ABS warning light goes off occasionally now!

The car is only used about 1500 miles per year and is garaged so should not be plagued by moisture and since the fist problem I disconnect the battery every time when left for any long periods of time.

From the symptoms you describe in the fisrt paragraph , The first place to look is the ashtray and the associated wiring for the cigar lighter. Some of the symptoms you describe can be caused by the ashtray shorting out on the cigar lighter circuit which is live ALL the time, thereby rpoving power for the rest of the car.

In the earlier days of the forum several members found the problems you describe were cured by checking this area.

Worth a good look and check but its a very difficult area to get to as the ashtray does NOT come out unless you remove the dash, but careful manipulation with fingers it is possible to check out the cigar lighter wiring.

I doubt that anything will show up on a code reader for those problems.
I think some people with similar problems to yours have found a fault with the loom trapped under the fuse box (battery side I think).

philgood.
If you DO need an EEC IV code reader,sector9 may still have one in kit form.
