hi there

p0171 is an error code for the system running rich. the car reports this as lean because that's what it's doing to try and correct the mixture.

have a read of this..... http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuelmonitor.htm

What is the condition of your lambda sensor?

Well, no idea, but MOT emission test was fine

On my 24V i have around 4 grams (can't exactly remember unit) reading of the MAF.

Simmo's 2.3 has an average idle (in neutral) of 864rpm with average MAF reading of 2.54g/s

My 24V has an average idle (in neutral) of 720rpm with average MAF reading of 2.9g/s (r=0.97) - in drive (but stationary) the MAF reads 3.7g/s

That's interesting because I have 4,27 g/s on idle

Sounds very like what I was having. Cleaning MAF had no effect.

A. is air filter clean? (Have to take it out and hold it up to a light to see properly)

B. try it with MAF sensor unplugged.

This assumes all else is perfect, spark plugs, O2 sensors, exhaust system etc. If gearbox behaves better, then could well mean MAF is kn*ckered. I had to get a new one to fix the problem. Also if it's been running rich could mean the cat is shot as well

As a complete ignoramus but with a little experience may I suggest something:  If the car runs well but the fuel economy, especially on Mways is poor, and you are getting P1071 the cause could well be a faulty O2 pre. Cat sensor/s.  I had this on my 24valve and the cure was a new pre Cat. Sensor on Bank 1 (offside in UK).  I had changed the Bank 2 Sensor but as the Bank 1 Sensor is difficult I did not change it as the car performed brilliantly except for a slight hesitation at traffic lights.
Bank 1 Sensor is a real pig to do.  I gave up and handed her over to my friendly Garage.  It took him an hour and a half to do with scuffed wrists etc. to boot!  But the result is no Codes, no hesitation at tickover, 28mph on Mways and goes like a rocket.

A real beauty of a Cossie.
