Title: scan required in Essex area
Post by lleewar on Aug 14th, 2009, 7:29pm
Hi, Is there anyone in the Essex area that can do a scan for me on my 95 2.0 Ultima. There are a couple of problems I need sorting (abs, airbag light and rough running) and it seems a scan could help resolve the problems without spending more than I can afford at this particular moment. This could be done over a few beers to lighten the load somewhat.  Cheers in advance

What are the symptoms of the ABS?. Does the light go out BUT come on above 10/15mph?. Have you looked in the 'Fault Finder' re the clockspring for the Airbag and have you cleaned the MAF?. Tell us more .  ;)

ABS Light goes out but comes on at the speeds mentioned. Have seen the clockspring advice ( how easy is it to do?) without problems. Will try most things myself.  Airbag light comes on and off at random and hitting dashboard in certain places puts it out but not permanently. Maf is new and clean, coil pack been suggested as the car seems to be pulling back on load, but release power and it goes smoother.

The ABS problem may well be with the controller. There is a common problem with this which was found and sorted by Tompion. Details of THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/abscontrollerrepair.htm) and other ABS checks are here. An easy check is to undo the two pin connector from the controller to the motor and apply power to it. If the motor runs then it is 99.9% a problem with the soldered joints.  ;) I take it you have found THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/interior/airbags/abclocksprng.pdf) re the clockspring. Have you inspected the coil packs and more imprtantly the wiring to them as this is another well known problem area.  ;) This (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/dohcloom.htm) will show you what I mean.

You need to connect it to a 12v battery.  If you really don't feel happy doing this put up your location and see if there is another member nearby who would give you a hand. Probably much safer!!. ;)

How do you do it with a 12v battery

This is the plug Simmo mentioned, unplug it push two wires into the plug (not the controller) & connect to the battery. Polarity doesn't matter.

Hi Put twelve volts onto plug and it worked so must be the controller. Looks like I have a controller to remove and solder. :(  Without trawling through all the pages, is there some info/diagrams that show how to remove the contoller?

Have you cleaned the sensors & sensor rings - you need to rule them out before repairing the controller.

Can they be checked/ cleaned without removal? Fronts are rusted in

Don’t try & remove the front sensors, just prise off the plastic cap on the inside of the wheel & clean it from there – you can see what it looks like with the cap removed in the last page of this thread:

The rear sensors come out easy enough.

ABS:Cleaned and double cleaned the rings and sensors and light is still on. Checked sensor connectors as well. Not electrically. Dont know how? Controller it is then.  AIRBAG: Removed steering wheel pad and airbag connector was very loose. Refitted and the light stays permanently off but randomly flashes with a tap on the dashboard to make it go. Clockspring it is then. Not got round to coil packs yet as Kenboy was sending me some. Wont work on them until I have replacements just in case!!!!
