You have the older 12v car not the 24 v ... Is that correct?

When you say rumble when you stop can you explain more please.

The 12v is really quite basic when it comes to codes and all you need is an OD type plug as shown on the main site where the links to.

Never found code reader to much good on the 12v really.

The plug you require is http://www.ecufix.com/shop/bmz_cache/7/7e6bdf3b20056c2cc8602c243f0debaf.image.159x150.jpg

readily available. Have you replace the rotor arm in the distributor,  also clean the coil located on the Nearside wing.

If it's a rumble when stopped it has to be associated either with the gearbox or the exhaust system and if it disappears when driving I would suspect the exhaust but its difficult to diagnose without hearing it or a better description.

Sean.
As Snoopy says it sounds more like a mechanical problem than an electronic one ! can't really see a scanner solving it.

You need a star reader and its quite easy to make a simple one . With regards Fault codes on the 12v they do not give much guidance really its more of a basic car than the later ones with OBDll . It was as far as I was concerned when I had mine more like the old days and back to basics.
Details on the main web site where you were directed to by Simmo!

Yours is EEC-IV I don't think there is any software for connecting to a PC like there is for EEC-V. Even if there is it won't be capable of doing much.

Sean.
I see from your first post that you have a misfire, this being the case, the rocking of the idling engine could cause a clumping under the car, particularly if the exhaust is near to the cross tiebar under the transmission.A weak transmission rear mount will let the nearside front pipe knock on the bar owing to a lowering of the unit.A temporary fix is to interpose three or four thick washers between the bar and the body.
Have you started with the basics of checking plugs and leads,if you pull the leads off one at a time whilst the engine is running (taking precautions not to receive a jolt) you will hear which one is missing. There is a slim possibility of a leaking valve,a compression check would reveal that.Your engine is the simplest and toughest of them all,and you should be able to diagnose the problem without a code reader, which after all only advises you of electronic unit faults, the 12valve having only the bare minimum, running the EEC IV PCM.

If its heavy on fuel then make sure you keep the air filter clean, and regular replacement is a good option. The 12v only does high 'teens around town and can get upto 32/34 on a good steady run.

Regular oil changes make a difference and you can use semi synthetic in it. It does not need fully synthetic IMHO.
I changed the oil on mine every 3k but that was personal preference as oil is cheap and the filter is only a couple of £'s.

I don't know if any of the guys on here still have the star tester circuit diagram that we had made up maybe some one will remember who did it.
I did have one but sold it with the car but it really wasn't of that much use!

Reset the average and see what it does over a tank full of fuel or a couple of weeks on mixed driving.

It is hunting on tickover suggest looking at the air filter and associated parts.
With regards "kickdown" you have to remember that is operated by a solenoid on the side of the gearbox and the throttle position. It did on mine seem to lag somewhat which is why I always used a manual change for  instant response much smoother and more control.
