just checking the way it works 2.3...mine doesnt start switching (using VE) until engine hot...is that normal? though had heater

its just engine is rough until its warm and wondered whether the lack of short fuel trim, which is zero, until lambda starts switching was normal ??

I can't remember exactly but I think mine starts switching within about 30 seconds, definitely long before engine is hot.

thanks for reply....its just mine is really rough for first 10 mins....ive changed the lamda...so now i need figure the wiring i guess as it must be that its not heating ?? canst see from wiring which wires are ground and ignition re colours anyone know to save time..need the pin out info please

hi there

the ecu doesn't/shouldn't use the lambda reading for about 180 seconds after starting the engine.

as dave says, in reality, it's more like under a minute.

if you don't have an obd reader that displays live data, you can use a multimeter set to 1 volt to 'watch' it switch. should be about 0.2 to 0.9 volts.

yes i can see whats happening i am using ve sware...it doesnt switch until engine gets hot...suspect no 12v to heater..not sure which wires are what ..but wonder if any reason i cant run an ignition switched 12v wire straight to heater connection if its missing...that 12v isnt switched on/off for any reason is it

Assume you’ve checked the fuse, according to the diagram the heater is fuse 40 feeding yellow to sensor & grey to PCM.

There is a code for no heater but you may need to go to the enhanced section to get it – don’t forget to tick the Ford box in the enhanced section.

I can’t see any reason not to feed it direct apart from draining the battery with the ignition on engine off.

hi there

i wouldn't worry too much if the heater isn't working (should give a code for it though).

it's will heat up soon enough from the exhaust gasses anyway, hence under a minute.

when you say no switching until a hot engine, what temp are you talking about? normal operating temp is about 90oC.
are you saying that your car take 10 minutes to get to this temp in this weather?

doesnt switch until reaches the midway position on gauge ie hot that takes 10 mins in this weather ...it only just got through mot i had to drive for 30 mins before ! and its really lumpy...i will check fuse 40 ( thanks ) in a while see if thats the culprit

ps cant see where to tick ford on enhanced codes..mine defaults to ford on a drop down menu ??

hi there

i'd replace your thermostat as it sounds like it's stuck open.

what is the long term fuel trim reading (will be a %)? might be running with 'choke' on all the time if it isn't coming up to temp.

ive got alex's sware ver 1.44 and a tricom lead are there any worthwile improvements on the later version?

...anyway there is 12 v on the heater terminals.....and its a new lamda but no swicthing until exhaust gets really hot eg 10 mins
so guess will have to try another lamda

anyone know where you can get with correct wiring so simple plug in
etc other than ford direct

update.........wont switch until very hot ; at least 10 mins plus & when it does stft sits at +30% engine smooth then drops to +3% engine lumpy but much better when engine warm

It’s a planar type which they say should be fitted to the 2.0/2.3 (the planar ones warm up a bit quicker).

Ver 151 is the last version I’ve tried that didn’t have some issues, but whether there’s any significant difference to Ver144 I don’t know.

I’ve just tried 144 & that doesn’t have the extra Ford box.

I often find it takes a few goes to get a response in the enhanced section so make sure you get “Server affirmative response” & not “PWM server no response”.

I checked the engine warm up on mine earlier from cold (stood overnight). It took 2miles for the gauge to reach horizontal, which was a mile at 30 & a mile at 50mph with no holdups & aircon on (so engine fan running).

thanks for the feedback on the sensor info and supplier ditto ve versions..i downloaded the 151 sware and saw the box . ticked etc

only code i get is running lean....basically at start up ltft goes up to 30% + and stft sits at zero lamda sits at zero..then when up to temp dont know what that is re exhaust but anyway then behaves

i have suspicion sensor is ok and the plus fuel trim is engine trying to address a lean mix..but cant see hear any air leaks

FWIW at some point (couple of years ago? Well before renewing the MAF & filters etc.) BOTH my lambdas were NOP (2L 16V), it only came to notice during MOT emissions test, i.e. didn't affect what it ran like. (Not perfect TBH, but there were other issues!)

So maybe something else is going on as well? I.e. chasing lambdas might be a bit of a red herring
