Title: Better Fuel Consumption (99mpg)
Post by phuturephantasy on Oct 2nd, 2004, 12:04am
I have found a way of obtaining an extraordinary increase in fuel efficiency in my 24v Scorpio.

1 Accelerate up to 140mph then release the gas pedal

2 Watch in Amazement as your instant mpg shoots up to 99mpg (and beyond)

I have however come across a slight problem (friction) - my car keeps slowing down and I have to return to step 1 at various points of a journey.

I will be applying PTFE spray to my tyres in a bid to alleviate this tiresome (or is that tyresome) problem and will report back on my findings (if I survive).

amazing phuture mate !  .. I will try this today and see if I can find a way to calculate the drag coeeficiency of four tyres ..obviously the first thing we need to try is running on cycle tyres but I'm wondering if the best way is to remove the wheels altogether ? ..that four or five inches of air cushion could really help ... I do frequently get consumption figures even higher than those you state but that's by not using the car for long periods which is a bit of a drag < pun >  .. regards ...STN

To determine the Coefficient of Friction Fr then use this calculation Fr = m x v / t but as you need to know several other factor such as the weight of the object and other variables  However you may assume for calulative purpose that the CoF for a dry road surface is 0.9 for Static Friction and 0.8 for Kinetic Friction.... But if you want Rolling friction then different rules apply...so for 'normal tyres on dry road surface you may assume for all normal calculations the the rolling friction is 0.015..

HTH STN   get the calculator out M8  ;) ;D

Someone asked me today how they should cure their squeaking brakes.
Being a member of the 'Phuturephantasy School of Motor Techniques', I recommended the application of washing-up liquid to the brake discs... Have I done the right thing?  :-/   ;)

And if that doen't work I would suggest removing the offending brakepads and replacing them with cloth ones, the old pads can be used as a template - Velour material as that used on my seats would be ideal.
