Title: Class action lawsuits
Post by davidbro on Oct 16th, 2004, 3:34pm
Can anyone explain what a class action lawsuit is and do we have them here in the UK? I hear about them all the time over in America but not sure if our legal system covers them?

I have a grandfather who suffers from an Asbestos related problem and I want to find out whether there is the equivalent of a class action lawsuit in the UK rather than trying to do something indivdiually. He wasn't a miner.

Thanks for any info or web sites that may help

David

A class action lawsuit is where one or more lawyers combine to help a large group of actual or potential claimants to pusue a joint action against an organisation (usually). A recent one in the UK was the Southall train crash victims group. I believe there is currently a class action for asbestosis sufferers ongoing in the UK, but I can't recall the details unfortunately, except that it was not relating to mining.

If you type "asbestosis claims" into Google and select "search UK", you will find a number of sites that might be of some help to you.

HTH.
