Title: P.T.O
Post by Paul B on Nov 17th, 2004, 10:40pm
For the diesel-techs!

Way off-topic this one. Sorry.
I'm trying to finalise the spec of the new van I'm getting in the new year, and am puzzled by something.
What is this PTO (Power Take Off) exactly?  ???
What does it do, how does it work, etc?

Thanks in advance... ME

Power Take Off Mechanism - A unit that provides power from the engine to other equipment. Can be either a mechanical mechanism or simply a generator feature.

Needless to say, it is not a feature my 1.7D K reg van comes with!  ;D

Hi Paul

A P.T.O. (power take off) is in theory what it says, it takes power from the engine via the gearbox, but the vehicle in question cannot be driven if the P.T.O is engaged.  They are generally fitted to vehicles like Tow Trucks (i.e. AA and RAC), because the equipment fitted (hydraulic mainly) like the roll on roll off flat beds and spectacle lifts needs more power than a battery or electric motor can handle, so a P.T.O is fitted to the gearbox to take power of the engine via the box.  But the P.T.O by-passes the main driveshaft so vehicle cannot be driven, if you do drive while it is engaged it can cause very serious damage to the gearbox.  If you aint having any powerful equipment fitted to your new van (i.e hydraulic platforms etc) i doubt you'll need one mate.  I used to be a recovery driver a few years ago so had to use one all the time, if you have any more questions regarding this just give us a shout lol.

Cheers guys.

And there was me thinking it might be some soopa-doopa acceleration feature.  :-[

Not going to be needing this by the look of it. Maybe thats why they didn't suggest it to me.

Thanks for filling me in on it though. At least now I know.
