Title: AOL instant messenger via mobile phone Post by Mike_Floutier on Dec 1st, 2004, 4:26pm Hi, Does anyone know of a good mobile phone/device that can connect to AOL's AIM instant messenger service? Although I'm in England, my son is in the US army in Iraq and he's using AIM to communicate with home. Problem is that I'm out most of the time and miss him when he's online. Any thoughts would be very welcome. Thanks Mike F |

Title: Re: AOL instant messenger via mobile phone Post by Dave on Dec 2nd, 2004, 5:43pm Hi Mike.. I got the old wap phone out last night and had a look for you. My browser is O2. With O2's 'Find' function I typed in AOL, and it brought up a brief list of options, one of which is messenger. Click that... log in... etc etc. It does work. Only thing is you have to be on wap all the time for it to work... The best wap deal i've found, and the one that i'm on (although I don't use it) is this O2 bolt-on thing, whereby you put ten pounds of credit on at the begining of every month which gives you 300 texts and eight hours (I think) of free wap usage.. and after all that you still have your tenner left over. Hope you get it going. And, best wishes for your son, and your family. Dave |

Title: Re: AOL instant messenger via mobile phone Post by Geoff_W on Dec 2nd, 2004, 11:30pm Mike, Other thing you might consider is a PDA like O2s XDA device and negotiate a GPRS deal with them but only use it to keep the AOL browser/messenger up. That way you should be able to get messages when he is on line but only get billed for data transmitted. Orange have something similar. May be an expensive solution to set up but always on at a reasonable price after that. Geoff |
