Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by Dave on Dec 2nd, 2004, 5:19pm ......It's a Scorpio..that's missing its back doors.. because someone has stolen them to make door babies. And now you need doors! You should have said. Try eBay. Or you could have mine for multiplying. No. Is it an E-type? Or were they all V12s.. Schimitar? Am I close with E-type? I'm off to start a thread on the problems page : )...... Dave |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by Baz on Dec 2nd, 2004, 9:25pm I guess I was closest then with two phone boxes!! I nearly bought a Delorean once and still have the sales brochure for it! I can scan it and mail it to you if your email address is still the same if you want My wife lived in Belfast and one of her neighbours worked for good old JD and had a car as well!! There's actually two on autotrader at the moment. Both 1981 models. one at £11,750 and the other at £16,500 I like them anyway! |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by admin on Dec 2nd, 2004, 11:17pm Cheers Baz, yes email address is the same and I'd love a copy. I'm getting mine in the US and it's been a desert car all it's life - best of it's $14,000 and the exchange rate is $1.91 today so for just over £7k it's a bargain. Shipping and customs etc is around £1500 and converting to UK MOT standard is £500 - plus I get to use it in the US for a couple of months. I'll probably do another scorpio style web site for it eventually :) - hope other owners are as great as Scorpio owners Steve |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by Geoff_W on Dec 2nd, 2004, 11:20pm Now then, ( :-/ thinks this is going to be a possibly dangerous/life threatening post) erm well fingerprints on stainless steel. You may already know this one Steve but.... as those of us with stainless steel kitchen appliances know finger prints are an absolute bar steward. But the solution is at hand. Jumbo can of WD40 and lots of polishing cloth and preferably someone else to do the hours of polishing needed. Happy motoring! Geoff ;) |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by john.n on Dec 3rd, 2004, 9:56am Hi Steve, i would be interested to know if SVA would be a problem, or because of the year of manufacture or the fact it was built in Ireland, would it not apply? john.n ??? |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by TaperOne on Dec 3rd, 2004, 10:42am Hi Steve, Interesting choice. From what I remember though, the main problem with these cars was that it tends to stop at every 'white line' in the road and have a sniff!!! Oh, sorry, that was the factory Con Artist. Good luck with it and I look forward to the WebSite. Cheers TaperOne |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by JohnJ on Dec 3rd, 2004, 4:10pm De Lorean, Well done, thats a nice toy, everyone else has done the Back to future thing so I'm not. Just hope you enjoy driving around in it....If it gets a mark on it you can use Fairy liquid and a Brillow Pad! Joke!! ;D Honstly Nice Car! ;) JJ |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by Dave on Dec 3rd, 2004, 4:19pm :o A Delorean :o :o ....................... :o ! Excellent! Coincidence time... I just got the Back to the Future boxset yesterday. You lucky boy. Wow. Will you take it to the Scorp meets (please)? D |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by admin on Dec 4th, 2004, 12:08pm Thanks all I'll post some piccys soon and yes it will be at the meets over the summer (I'm just looking for some 'My other cars a Scorpio' stickers LOL) It wasn't bought for speed or handling - actually both are rubbish anyway - I think there are some kitcars that are designed and built better :) The stainless steel will be a problem though - it's hard to keep looking good for long - there were 3 gold plated ones made for Rolex so theres an idea for an upgrade haha Steve |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by john.n on Dec 4th, 2004, 12:37pm How about flatting it down and having a couple of coats of 2k clear laquer over it. Must be easier to polish than stainless and i think would give it a nice shine! ;D john.n |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by admin on Dec 4th, 2004, 12:44pm There have been a few that have been painted over the years but half the attraction is the raw stainless, the other half are the doors :) There are a couple of specialist cleaning kits available which I will try first of all - I see my wife has a 'stainless steel cleaner' in the kitchen - maybe she's expert at it :P Steve |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by Snoopy on Dec 4th, 2004, 3:00pm It might be well worth you getting a few of those excellent micro cloths.. they polish SS up like new and do no scratch... used after the ss cleaner cream works wonders... I know because that just ONE of my jobs.....! |

As the vehicle was manufactured in NI by a licensed vehicle manufacturer then the SVA doesn't apply. Also, because of its rarity, it's only subject to 5% customs duty rather than the normal 27.5% The changes required for the MOT are quite simple - wire in some foglights, change the headlamps to point the right way and then to add in front white sidelights. By using Hella replacement front lamps you can kill to birds with one stone as they include sidelights. Other than that, its just a case of paying the £38 for a reg number and getting used to driving a LHD vehicle. Steve |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by Danny_R on Dec 5th, 2004, 9:38pm Hi Steve Congratulations on your purchase. I've wanted a DeLorean since I was a kid. The good news it that the delorean members club over the years have managed to iron out most of the faults that the DMC12 came with like the door struts, weather seals, AC units, power locks etc.. In fact original DMC parts are still plentiful although a tad expensive. If you have a lot of money to play with you can have the PRV V6 130BHP engine replaced with the revised 195BHP PRV V6 giving it the power it should of had in the first place. Well done mate. please post pics when you have them. Regards Danny R |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by Paul B on Dec 6th, 2004, 7:08am Steve.... Does it have the Flux Capacitor fitted? ;) |
||
Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by admin on Dec 6th, 2004, 11:22am LOL - no flux capacitor I'm afraid. Allegedly the PRV V6 24V with 210bhp as standard will drop straight in or even the turbo version from the Renault Alpine 610 - but I'm really not sure whether it's the type of car that can take the power safely. The DMC-12 was developed over a 2 year period - they went to Porsche originally but they wanted a 6 year development cycle. Eventually they persuaded (conned?) Lotus into doing the work at a time when Lotus were cash strapped and needed to get some money from anywhere just to stay afloat. They developed the double Y chassis and used the same resin injection system for the 'tub' as they were using on the then new Elite. But to be honest, it's about the closest thing to a kitcar than came from a proper manufacturer (it even uses Austin Allegro door handles!) - a bit like an early TVR. Steve |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by Baz on Dec 6th, 2004, 12:53pm Did you know you can even get a "bra" for your Delorean? I kid you not!! http://www.delorean.com/!!!images/bra_images/bra3.jpg Good site this Steve for bits. There is also www.delorean.co.uk which is a good source as well I'm told |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by admin on Feb 15th, 2005, 6:16pm Sorry I forgot to update this thread - the DeLorean never happened due to undisclosed faults (the Law over here is in the favour of the buyer thank goodness!) Anyway I ended up with a 1988 Chevrolet Corvette convertible which is in mint condition, one owner etc. Here's the pic http://www.carpcs.net/88corv.jpg If anyone is interested it's a 5.7L V8 with Tuned Port Injection which provides amazing amounts of torque but only 245 bhp. Max power is at 4700 rpm so it's a big lugging motor and can hit 60 in 6 secs - goes around corners like you are driving an old mini - mind you the rear tyres are 275/45 17s. Did a drive over to Phoenix, AZ in the week and it returned the equivalent of 26mpg. Similar to the Scorpio but a heck of a lot cheaper to run over here! Steve |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by Dave on Feb 15th, 2005, 6:57pm Wow... you've done well! It's a stunner. You're much better off with that! What a beaut. Will you be bringing it over to the homeland then? The 5.7.... is that the really popular engine that appears in pretty much every american muscle car ever? The yanks are all about torque.. they're mad. Good for cruising? Vey nice! D |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by Snoopy on Feb 15th, 2005, 7:51pm Droooooooool I wish.... Nice one Steve, |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by admin on Feb 16th, 2005, 8:23am Thanks - yes, compared to the DMC it's a far better purchase. I paid $8800 for it which is around 4700 and its worth every penny. It will be coming back with me too although it will need to be rustproofed first as it's a Californian car and never seen rain in its life. Yes, the engine is the 'standard' 350 Chevy that was fitted to a lot of US cars and I believe holds the record for the most engines every produced of one type. This one has the aluminium heads and the Tuned Port Injection bit refers to the inlet manifold - each cylinder is fed from a 14" inlet tube - similar to the 24V Scorpio, which means massive amounts of torque but whereas the Scorpio has the VIS which shortens the inlet length at higher revs, the Corvette doesn't. So it only pulls hard to around 5000 - and that's why at 40 mph the engine is only doing 1100 rpm - an amazing experience! I do hear that Procharger (www.procharger.com) do a bolt on supercharger for them for around $5000 but it's so original that I don't want to mess with it :) You never know, you may get to see and drive it at one of the Scorpio meets one day! Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by Dave on Feb 16th, 2005, 10:43am Wow, indeed. I think that corvette is the best shape they ever made. They got a bit strange in the late nineties. It really is a stunner. What an experience it must be, with such an engine. I can't imagine what the transition is like.. but I bet it feels like it's meant to be. Ahh. My dream is, to one day, go to america with about £10k, buy a car, travel around it, and bring the car back. I've been thinking about it a long time.. I think I want a 1978ish dodge magnum because it's a bit different. Or a mark one mustang for obvious reasons. I don't know.... i'm years and years away yet. Enjoy those wide roads whilst you can! And that's a point... do they allow 'gas' in your hand luggage? Hmmmmm ::) D |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by admin on Feb 16th, 2005, 8:00pm I have to admit, the ability to be able to do a U turn on just about every road has it's advantages :) There seems to be a blatent disregard for the speed limit too - usually by young Asian women - 65mph on a 40mph posted road seems the norm with them. Gas (Petrol) is around $1.99 per US gallon at the moment although it has varied over the last 3 weeks between $1.83 and $2.15 - the exchange rate is around $1.88 at the moment so it's around a GBP 1.10 per UK gallon. The Americans are really b'itchin about it too which really makes me laugh. 10 grand will get you a really nice Muscle car over here and shipping back to the UK is around 1500. The best thing to do is fly into San Francisco and spend a week or so looking at vehicles (buying from California means the car has never seen rain or salt) and then drive it across to the East coast for shipping - that's a nice 2 week vacation :) Temporary Motor insurance will cost you around $400 for a month. Don't forget to get any problems fixed whilst you are here such as new battery, starter motor, alternator, bushes and bearings etc. They are cheap here but get expensive when they have to be shipped back. Plus I have heard stories about spares being removed from the boots of cars being shipped! As a weekend fun car a 70's or 80's US vehicle is hard to beat - not so practical for everyday use though. Steve |

Owww, one day, one day a yank would be just great. One day. Enjoy the rest of your 'vacation'! Heh heh heh. Dave |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by low_tom on Feb 18th, 2005, 5:53pm don't matter when you gots all that power to make overtaking easy. used to have a 75 chevy nova with a 79 blazer 350 in. Built properly made 350bhp and 415ft/lb torque. u-turn = hard lock, foot down ;D |

Title: Re: I'm getting a new toy - guess what Post by admin on Feb 20th, 2005, 1:36am I know how that works :) The Corvette is in the garage having new poly bushes and shocks installed as well as all th suspension is being cleaned and detailed. The Vette suspension is all alloy and polishes up fantastically - more pictures on their way in a couple of weeks -until then check out my88vette website (http://www.my88vette.com/products.htm) |
