Title: Dealer exagerations!!
Post by Baz on Jan 6th, 2005, 10:10am
Just had a look on EBay and there is a guy selling a 1998 Silver facelift 16v which has 47000 on the clock. Nice ultima spec and looks good (looks like mine actually so it must do!!)

The bit that made me laugh was part of his description and I quote "Finished with Brilliant Silver coachwork and contrasting Raven Connolly hide upholstery with Burr Walnut veneer dash and cappings" I think he may be getting a bit confused with a Bentley or something because mine certainly doesn't have connolly hide nor does it have burr walnut dash and door cappings!!

Also the headlamp washers are missing oh and it has had a new speedo and is only showing 26000 miles.....suddenly doesn't look quite soooo goood

Hi,

I could be wrong here, but isn't the mileage held in the ECU, not the speedo. If my thinking is right, this could be a genuine 26k miler. If so, surely worth a look to anyone wanting one.

Aye Aye, anyone told the Captain!

Cheers

Hi Waders,

I hear what you are saying, but if the speedo was changed at 19k in 2000, it might only have done 7k since then. All the dealer is doing is adding up the two mileages. I am sure it is mentioned on the website somewhere that changing the speedo does not alter the mileage as it is held in the ECU. Hopefully someone can confirm this.

Cheers

PS. Might see you at the Herts meet. Live in Harrow so not too far to go.

Talking of scorps on ebay not looking quite right what about this one? It appears to be a facelift but does not have tinted headlights and the fogs dont look right either? Anyone agree?

Personally I would say that it is a facelift model but it has had a front end crunch, hence the headlights and the wrong bumper, as facelifts in breakers yards are non existant usually.

It has the centre rear headrest and also the 3 point rear centre belt so it is definately a 98 model. The wheels are the old (95,96) Ultima alloys and are only 15" as opposed to the 16" 12 spokes.

I would definately think it has had a smash at the front and the bumper came with the wrong lights (no fogs) but they used them anyway

Just my opinion (There's not only Eric that can play Sherlock!!)

I agree with Baz 100 percent - its a shame really as it puts you off knowing the repair has been done "on the cheap" as opposed to new parts through an insurer.

I have to say I am glad I am a member of this illustrious forum as a year ago I could well have bought that car not knowing any different!

I could be putting you all off the trail then put a cheap bid in myself!!

And no I am not a policeman....I'm far to honest a person for that!

Mmmm, one of the best I've seen on E-Bay, and looks like he'll get  the book price.  I'm always a bit  worried when  the odometer cluster is replaced,   Why?,   what possible calamity can befall  a  2 year old  speedo ?

My  old  pessemistic  outlook   always   thinks   it's  a  ploy to conceal  true mileage.

I like the bit on the auction for the silver one where he says at the end:

Do not bid and then remove that bid after several days, as you then just drop the highest bid on to the under bidder who thought they have lost the car and bought else where. Result: I loose the sale and every one gets very upset as you now have a non paying bidder situation. If you bid you HONOUR that bid until auction end, even if you are out bid!

So what, thats how some people play Ebay to see what the competion have bid up to. Then at the last minute you bid the same again and this time you win!!

well, looks like the smart money is on a "front ender" then, cant think of no other reason than that, will watch and see what it goes for,but too many "uncertainties" about the car for my liking, and back to the car being 7 years old,but has already had 6 owners... ???...

nick, bet your glad your getting a saab now.... ;)
not long to wait now.. ;D
3 months and counting yeah !!?? :) :)

Re. the milage. The total milage is held in the "2nd" memory of the ecu. Although this can also be removed by unscrupulous people. john.n :(

Whoever had the car and before selling took off the ultima wheels and stuck them on the wifes mondeo, seen it done before, they look massive on any other car. but it just rises suspision and the members on this site seem to go in for the kill once they can smell a rat!!! which is a good thing to say the least.

JJ

It has as mentioned definatly had a front ender, and that could also explain the dodgy wheels(only because there on this car), maybe one of the originals got damaged in the crash.

Wouldnt go neer it with a barge pole, (or the silver one)
with 26,000 no 40ish on the car or the clock!

now I'm happy with mine knowing it origonal   ::)
There is so much rubbish out there and its easy to get caught.

Looks like someone bought the silver one as it has been withdrawn from auction.
Be interesting to see if the new owner appears on the forum.

I have to agree with you Johnj, I bought mine eyes wide open to what it would need in the near future. Over the next few months I will be changing the 3 wheel brngs that have not yet failed and also the front wish bone bushes, anti roll bar mounts and drop rods, only a matter of time......125k is time ::) If you believe you bought a "low" miles example and you needed to do all that you'd be rightfully upset >:(
