Title: Passed The M.O.T Today, But..... Post by Paul B on Jan 20th, 2005, 11:15pm ..... I was a bit surprised to find I had a side light out on the back. Where's the bulb failure gadget when you need it? Was very pleased that all my hard work with the handbrake paid off. It sailed through on brakes. But... I was VERY disappointed to be told that I had a broken off-side ball joint >:( "You sure?" I said. "Have a look" he said. I did. And it did move... a bit. The thing is, I did both the wishbones, link rods and all bushes this time last year (after the nearside joint was found to be worn). But anyway, its still passed. But probably only because the guy was in a good mood :-/ Surely these should last longer than a year (and only about 7000 miles)..? |

Post by SaveTheNight on Jan 21st, 2005, 8:36am Hi Paul and well done with the brakes then mate ! .. handbrakes on the Granada or Scorpio are one of the worst to read well on the brake rollers so you must have done a pretty good job !!! ... regarding the ball joint ..there is a tolerance on them that is a little more than any MOT staion would like really so I wouldn't worry too much ... coupled with the fact I have never seen even badly worn ones pull out < on the Scorp >.. needs keeping an eye on though ..as yours were fordparts direct.. if I remember correctly and I have no knowledge of whether they are genuine or recon units .. but again we both know many members who have had them and we haven't heard of failures .?? .. well done again Percy ! ......... (http://www.fordpartsuk.com/) What a soopa doopa memory you have :) As far as I'm aware, they are new parts :-/ and I must say that it didn't move that much when he levered it. And he said "It'll look worse when I jack it up a bit".... it didn't. And he kind of struggled to reproduce the movement he found originally. So maybe you're right... maybe I shouldn't be worried :-/ But yes, I'll keep an eye on it. |

Post by mr._floppy on Jan 22nd, 2005, 5:13pm I wonder ( if there are any MOT testers amongst our number ) if during an MOT test a little leeway is given to the in-built poorer performance of a disc operated handbrake compared to a brake shoe one ? Every rear disc-ed car I've had is absolutely crap at holding the car on moderate gradients. Even after recently fitting new rear pads to my Ultima , the hand brake has to be at the limit of it's movement before it holds the weight of the car. I'm sure thankful the Scorps got a transmission lock. |

Post by Paul B on Jan 22nd, 2005, 7:33pm I have to say that my handbrake is now capable of holding the weight of the car :) And its all down to those actuator arms. Now that they move properly (and the whole thing is adjusted correctly of course) its great. The trouble is, I think, that with a car like the Scorpio, you don't really need it to work 100% due to the fact that you can just whack into 'PARK'. Mr Floppy... Maybe you should investigate how well your mechanisms are operating and get them working well before the seize up. I think I caught mine just in time. |

Post by mr._floppy on Jan 22nd, 2005, 11:58pm Paul B, No danger of my handbrake mechanism seizing up, I'm a believer in the power of grease ( not the Musical, Oh! hold on, I've just had a vision of Olivia Neutron-Bomb in those black leather leggings, Yousa !! ) to repel water and to keep external moving parts , erm, moving . I've also bled the brake system, as the rear calipers with the built-in handbrake actuator are prone to internal rust from contaminated brake fluid. Nope, I have to disagree with Save The Night, and reiterate , disc operated handbrakes are a poor relation to the drum variety. Pads on discs are woefully inefficient braking system without the outside help of servo assistance, ( try braking with no engine vaccuum , Scary !! ) hence the large amount of effort needed on the handbrake lever . |

Post by SaveTheNight on Jan 23rd, 2005, 9:19am still betcha yours are adjusted incorrectly !! .... and it's a bit naughty bringing servo assist in ... the handbrake ONLY has to do it's job .. no more than that .. and although discs have slightly less contact area than shoes it not very relevant as long as it holds the car .. one notch is perfectly acheivable on the Scorp although four is the best setting ..
