Yep, bin day and recycling day here today. I'm truly gutted, the rear arch looks bad, real bad. The front wing is also badly scored and out of shape.
And the real twist is I wasn't well yesterday and I got Ellie to move the car round the corner 'cos it was the last car in a row and I was paranoid about someone hitting it.
Laugh, I'm certainly not >:(

Actually, could you get on to the council and find out which van(s) were round that day then check them for damage?

Swines....  :(

Dave,

I have this feeling that without a witness, even if I found a lorry with damage to it (and my paint), it would be a vain attempt. Looks like I'll repair it myself AGAIN....though I think the rear arch or front wing will ever be the same :'(

Sorry to see this Barry, especially after all the work you put in when the chavs had the front off it :'(

Seriously, if you could find the bin lorry that did it, well, the driver did leave the scene of an accident didn't he? Mind you, these days, it's probably some contract collection service operated by the lowest bidder - and I bet they give a t*ss what their drivers do :-/

Chin up mate. I'm sure you'll get it back in good order.

Dave

Oh yes she'll be put as right as can be done, within reason.

Responce from phone call to Barnet refuse dpt, If you have a Reg number report it to the police...and no, you can't come to look at our lorry's for paimt...

Next call will be a body shop me thinks.

I suppose at least It's perfectly drivable once I replace the mirror glass. (although I'll have to open the door from inside to let  Ellie in)

Anyone got any spare door handles :-/

Bad luck mate, but it is worth checking with the council if the bin men could be culprits.

I had my 1983 Crappy hit when parked over night a few years back on a main road. My sister saw the car the next morning and asked what I'd driven into the night before! Not amused.

The car was parked next to a bus stop and had damage to the right front wing and the bumper. It was very likely that a bus did the damage. I wrote immediately to the bus company (Travel WM) who basically said no way. So I phoned and wrote again asking for full details of the buses on the route overnight and for them all to be checked. They said no accidents had been reported but I persisted and persisted and eventually they sent an assessor out to check the damage on my car and that it was possible. They eventually paid up in full what I asked for stating payment was in full and final settlement with no admittance of liability.

It took 3months and about 10 letters and numerous phone calls, but eventually result. I'll try and dig out my correspondence tonight so I can assist with wording if you need. All I can say is it can't hurt to try.

Hope this helps
Paul

Time is the one thing I've got as the car drives fine.

I may yet find a witness that "saw" "a" bin lorry hit my car, so I'd be very interseted to see your paperwork and I think I'm going to the local small claims court for some forms tomorrow. I realy think an independent witness would swing all in my favor.

Paul, please Email me or send a PM if you find your paperwork, thanks Barry.

Edit; 2 of my neighbours saw our BIN LORRY struggling to get out of the side road I was parked in (narrow road cars park both sides) but can't say they saw it hit the car!!  Getting closer I feel.............

Waders, did you call the Police at all?
It will actually be a criminal offence, leaving the scene of an accident. If you pass on all the info that you have they will do the investigating, the response of Barnet refuse is immaterial, regardless of whether you have a reg no, the Police will have the powers to search their yard for suspect lorries. All you need is the evidence that your car was parked in the area on collection day and the witness to say they saw a lorry having probs.

Hope you get it sorted mate.... good luck.

George

Wow Daven,

Definitely, a new wing is the only real option I can see. The groove could be filled but getting anything like back to shape I think is asking a bit much!

I'll PM you and make arrangements.

THANKS, THANKS, THANKS.

(I nearly smilled then)

Barry.

Yes, I phoned the police (before I found witnesses)
They asked if anyone was hurt or if I had a Reg number or description for whatever hit me.
The answer to all these was no at that time. They told me to claim from MY insurance as thats what it's for!! (I Think I only got to speak to a desk clerk)

I will Go to the police station in the morning but I'll not be putting much hope on them investagating.

Down to me to be detective I think!!

Bad luck mate, the most expensive  type of  accident,  no structural damage ,  but  every panel dented or  scored  and very difficult to repair successfully .

Check for any  shop , pub or Police  CCTV  cameras that may have caught the incident.

Thanks to you all for your obvious genuine concern. It has eased the sadness muchly.
I just went to pick up Ellie from work and she (the car) still drives lovely, alot of the scrapes T-cutted off the doors and wings but a new front wing is in order , two s/hand doors and I recon I'll always have some dents left at the rear wing, she WILL be repaired.

Mr floppy, It was a residential road, no hope of CCTV.

A sad but not out Waders.

Waders, The Council may not let you on to their property to inspect but they sure as hell can't stop you standing outside and watching the lorries come out of the depot.  What you may be able to do is have a sample of the paint analysed as that should identify the vehicle by type, manufacture etc and certainly if you eventually have a 'suspect' vehicle it would be excellent if not conclusive evidence of contact between the two vehicles. If the vehicle does a regular collection how about being there 'same time same place' next week. Also a letter pushed through a few doors in the road may find you the eyewitness you're looking for. If you do find a possible culprit don't forget you'll need to get, officially, the paint sample you think is from your car. Good luck. Simmo

I spoke to the local refuse dept today, got a name and address to write to. Once I told them I have two independent witnesses (thats all I said, no detail) the attitude seemed to change!!

So, two quotes and a long letter will be prepaired this weekend, popped into the post monday morn and I'll see what happens.

Hi Waders - Thanks for your reply

No luck with a Scorp - I was looking everywhere

You call up - it was either sold or did not meet specific criteria I was looking for

Example - 32000 on the clock - superb

Called up - a printing error - should have been 132000

Bit of a difference  :-/ :-/ :-/

Even the cars on our FOR SALE had been sold a long time ago

One at the auction - last week - 45,000 R Plate 2.3 ULTIMA - yippee  :D :D :D

When I started it - Engine was rough - no MOT  :-[ :-[
Paintwork - uneven - had a lot of work

To top it all whist engine was running - I was looking under  the bonnet - car locked itself - after pneumatic bag was used to pry open door - no locks were working - sun roof problem - steering pump leaking etc etc etc

It went for GBP 2100 - I did not even bother to bid

After all of this frustration - searching etc

I have had to ( TEMPORARILY ) split from the ranks - I needed a car

Got an Auto Vauxhall Vestra 2.5i CDX - Leather - all of the toys - Plus sat nav - loop phone

I have not given up my search though - but I was getting so fed up :-/ - travelling miles - and when you get there :-[ the SCORPIO was not even half as good as my old one that got torched

Michael ( Captain )

Michael,
I'm still keeping an eye out for a good 2.0 or 2.3 up here but nothing worth having has surfaced recently.
I'll be in touch if I see anything...
There's an M reg 2.0 est in my local dealer for 10 months now... all cloth and no toys... aside from that it looks nice and clean with no major bodywork problems. Nowhere near what you had though.. I'll keep looking... do you like diesels?

Just come across this thread,GUTTED!

What a state to see a Scorpio in,especially someones pride and joy!.

Reading through, likely culprit=council dusty bin wagon. Looking at those rear load wagons they do have a long overhang at the rear that swings out quite threateningly and by the looks of it at the right height too.

Get your tape measure out waders and see if the marks correspond to the height of the dangly bits at the back of a dustcart.!!

Really sorry to read of your problems Waders.

Let's hope that your refuse contractors wheelie have a conscience.

But just in case they don't, I would suggest that you write a short note to the Local Authoity addressed to the Contracts Manager simply explaining that you are putting him on notice that you have a claim against the contractors.  Give only very brief details (Their bin wagon hit my car and caused £1,000 damage.)

If he is doing his job properly, he should then contact the contractors.  In my experience, this form of 'scissor' attack does tend to focus the attention of people being claimed against.

If the contractors don't settle, you can then go back at them via the Council because you have already told them, in writing, about your problem.

I hope that this helps.

Rod
