Title: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by admin on May 22nd, 2005, 4:23am Just came across this site that recommends adding 3oz of acetone to 10 gallons of petrol and testing shows that it can improve MPG by 20% http://peswiki.com/index.php/Directory:Acetone_as_a_Fuel_Additive No idea if it works so has anyone else ever heard of this or even tried it? Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by scorpio_man on May 22nd, 2005, 9:53am hi steve interesting stuff. could be a bit like those power booster products. http://www.speeding.co.uk/acatalog/Ecotek.html as stated in the article, you need to be careful with acetone. i work with the stuff and it can do some damage to painted surfaces, plastics etc. not to be messed with. ;) we use it to clean resist off parts coated in it for up to 2 weeks. with fresh acetone in the tank, it comes off in about 1 hour. you have been warned. {} |

Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by dart on May 22nd, 2005, 2:04pm I used to build boats a few years back and we used to use a lot of acetone to clean resin rollers and tools in the fibreglass department. We HAD to wear gloves!if this stuff gets on your skin it's molecules are so small it's straight through your pores and into the blood stream!nasty :o Very intresting products on the links, wonder if acetone does any long term damage to the motor? :) |

Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by scorpio_man on May 22nd, 2005, 2:35pm hi there i agree. not to be messed with. our gloves only last 15 minutes when we're at the cleaning bench (90 lts). it then starts to disolve our latex inner glove! gives you a laugh when you take off the outer gloves and find you only have cuffs left! ;D |

Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by admin on May 22nd, 2005, 4:56pm Yes, I remember that you need to be careful with it however if it's just a case of pouring small amounts into the tank to get improved MPG then it's worth a try and when I get back to the UK I'll have a go and see what happens. There is a disclaimer in the article about it affecting low grade plastics but the stuff used in cars is designed to be OK with petrol and all additives so they should be ok - just don't spill it down the side of the car when filling :) - I'll premix it with a gallon of petrol first. |

Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by Pegasus on May 23rd, 2005, 2:10pm Hi All, this is interesting. Agree with the warnings - its v. volatile so extremely flammable and always work in well ventilated area (known to be narcotic and can induce coma in extreme cases). Just done some qick calcs and wonder how much its worth it. I can get acetone for 7p/ml (50% cheaper if I buy a 25litre drum!), from the site I'll need 23ml for 1 litre petrol for max improvement (metric graph), so it'll cost me: petrol at 84p/l }{ plus acetone at 16p (added to 1 litre) gives £1/litre. If I get 25% improvement the final cost is 80p/litre which'll give me a pint of beer for every tankful. I might just have a go anyway and see what happens. TTFN P |

Made no difference to final calculation though. :( As I'm about to get the obd kit I was wondering if its possible to use this to record the av mpg during a measured run or do I have to rely on the trip computer? Any ideas anyone? P |

Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by Eddie on May 28th, 2005, 5:51pm Acetone=Nail Polish remover! I once worked at an experimental plant for recycling coated paper(IDEM). 60 tonnes of the stuff (acetone) in a large doughnut shaped tank. Steam was used to boil off the residue acetone from the treated paper. On one occasion the system was shut down incorrectly and the paper (due to steam temps.) began to spontaneously combust!! All we heard was a dull thump as the pyrotechnic blast arresters went off. Not a good day! :-[ The system was scrapped due to acetone residue in the recycled paper being incompatible with the chlorine bleaching system used at the subsequent paper manufacturing process. I think Acetone+chlorine makes a form of phosgene gas!!!!!!!! eddie |

Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by Eddie on May 28th, 2005, 5:57pm oops! so busy telling the story forgot about the reason for posting. Does the acetone work by slowing down the combustion process and therefore producing a longer burn and hence more torque?? A bit like the old leaded fuel. eddie |

Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by admin on May 28th, 2005, 6:15pm No, the acetone breaks the surface tension of the petrol allowing much better atomisation and therefore a better mix of air/fuel in the combustion chamber. It sounds like it might benefit olde, high mileage cars whose injectors are getting a little clogged. Steve |

Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by Octavian_P on May 29th, 2005, 4:07pm there are also the naphtalyne balls, that increase engine power. But i don't recomand it. I wander what side efects could be. |

Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by brewer on Jun 12th, 2005, 9:56am If the dosage is 3 oz per 10 gallons(UK or US?) this is roughly 2ml per litre if you must use metric! It is an excellent solvent but not corrosive. By the way,it is also called propanone or propan-2-one , the name acetone has been discontinued by the scientific community although it is still in general everyday use. |

Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by ferretmobile on Jun 13th, 2005, 10:41am I noticed , when I was shopping in France last week at the "super-u" that you could buy acetone in the car section. I diddnt clock the price but next time that I go back I will buy a couple of bottles and try it out and let you guys know how I get on. Presumably it gives more performance but if you were to drive a little more lightly with the right clog you should get more mpg ??? hmmm. Le ferrete. |

Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by Eddie on Jun 13th, 2005, 5:48pm http://ptcl.chem.ox.ac.uk/MSDS/PR/propanone.html Why do these descriptions allways sound really nasty? What do they use in nail varnish remover these days,I know they use to add an oil to it for that purpose . What would it do to a plastic tank or any plastic fittings in the tank, float for example and some of the anti siphon components just inside the filler neck? eddie |

Title: Re: Improve -MPG - add acetone?? Post by brewer on Jun 14th, 2005, 8:24am In a 0.2% or so concentration that we are talking about it probably wouldn't do any damage to the fuel system fittings.Remember that petrol itself is a pretty good solvent! When acetone is used as nail polish remover it also removes the natural oils leaving the nails looking dull and dry so oil is added to counter this. |
