Craig,

I always use the +R as I find them more stable and easier to read in normal dvd players. No doubt others will say different, but this is my preference.

Craig . Do you knonw what make of DVD writer it is?

In general most DVD writers will write to CD R/RW and DVD +/-.

If you knwo the make you can go to the makers website and check the specifications .

If you are not sure just buy one of each and try them.

I presonally use whatever is on ofer at the time .
ATM I am using Phillips DVD+ 8 speed. I have found the dual layer ones still too expensive for me to justify the cost.

Craig,

If your writer has only the + sign on it then that usually means that it will only be able to write to +R/RW discs only, please check your laptops literature and this should tell you what format your drive supports, or as snoopy says go to the manufacturers website and input the model number and this will tell you which formats it supports.  Also not all DVD players will play both -/+ formats, again you have check the players literature for its specs.

Also re above the general difference is the cost of the disks. This format war goes way back from the days of VHS and Betamax video's. A group of companies stiched up the other group by releasing VHS in large cheap quantaties therby knocking out the very much better BEtamax video format. The same group of companies that were stiched now play cat and mouse with anything else that they can.

Oh and  a p.s if your writer has only a + symbol it will only record to plus disks.

There is not much price difference between the two formats, if any its just a few pence, the main difference is that one is better suited to one type of recording against the other, but your right it is just like the old betamax vs VHS battle eventually one will win through, so its best were your money will stretch to, is to get a dual format writer and your covered either way.
