Title: Your first car?
Post by janspeed on Jun 26th, 2005, 10:53am
So guys what was your first car after passing your test?

Mine i have to say was a Datsun Cherry, in gold. :-[
1.0 litre, it had more holes in it than the British legal system.(loop holes).

Then i discovered the blue oval. ;D

Hi.
I got 95 mph outta my 1.0 Cherry. down hill. lol }{
was a good car, except for the tin worm. i filled the holes with cardboard and filled over them and a tin of gold paint later, hey presto. there was over spray every where. i know it was naughty of me to do that but i was a spotty 17 year old scroat at the time,i sold it on and got what i paid for it.
i`m happy to say i`m not like that now, honest me lod.

a good old P reg 1.3 escort van for me did my first wheel spin and the leaf springs came apart.....then i had a datsun 120y T reg excellent on the outside , rotten sills and door bottoms on the inside it was the high spec that made me buy it back in 1983 lol (rear reversing lights , intermittent wash wipe, two yes two door mirrors and front headrests and arear window heater) wow i was posh then. only Rolls Royce had most Scorpio spec then.

N-reg Ford Cortina 2000 XL estate for me, which got subtly modified along the way.

This is it at Bromley Pageant of Motoring sometime late 80's / early 90's.    And I still have this tucked away.

1460 racing mini. (I worked for Howley Racing after leaving school) badged as a mini 1000 in Blaze (orange) it had a mini mayfair interior and loads of new bits from breakers yards (even then I couldn't stay away from them!)

We used to have drivers including Steve Soper who drove our minis and later metros. One of the guys who worked with me went off to Cosworth of all places!!

I passed my test in my first XJ6, 1981 series III 4.2 auto, cost £3,000 to buy the car, £1,100 to insure it !

Wrote it off 18 months later - rolled it into a telegraph pole  :-[

My first car was a 1980 Mk1 957cc Fiesta Festival in metallic silver.

Bought for £800 in 1990 with 38,000 on the clock. Taken to the scrap yard in the sky 10 years later with 138,000 miles on it! Not bad vfm!

Put on pepperpots, a peco exhaust and manifold and used to nav rally it while up in Newcastle on Tyne. Loved the car. That's why I kept it for a further 5 years after I'd finished using it as my only car. My sister had it for 2 years then I kept it Mot'd and taxed and used it on occasions when I could.

Scrapped it when I ran out of space to keep it (and the tin worm was at it's peak).

Lost count of all the others cars I had since then.
Must sit down and think of them all one day and write a list.

Sorry, but I'm going to swear now...

V***hall Nova 1.2 Merit.. In yellow! It was a great little car, D reg (D864LNA) so 10 years old when I bought it in '96 for £1500 but it only had 34,000 miles on the clock! It ran like an absolute dream, pretty nippy and you could fit 5 people in the back! I put (glued!) a blue GSI style spoiler on the back, but never got round to painting it to match the car! It was stolen and recovered at one point.

Drove it for 2 years and about 25,000 miles without any major problems then some stupid woman in a VW Polo drove into the side and wrote it off :(

Up until a couple of years ago I still saw it driving round after a fella bought it off me and made it roadworthy again (Although there was still the dent in the bonnet where my mate sat on it!)

That was followed by a succession of absolute sheds that lasted about 6 months each, 'til I realised owning a 10 year old Escort was costing me more per month than buying a brand new Nissan Micra!

Mk 5 1980 Ford Cortina 1.6GL !!......couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding....slightist incline and you were in 3rd gear....still not a bad car for a 18 y.o. back then......beat clapped out minis/escorts hands down....

Part chopped it for my first Granada (Mk2 2.3GL) and haven't looked back since....The Cortina was actually nicked off the forecourt of the garage I'd sold it too and found smashed up and burnt out...sad ending for it really...just goes to show there were gits about back then!

A  Rusty White 1969 Austin 1100 bought for a hard earned £220  in 1977.  Even with only 60+K  on the clock it  used more oil than petrol  ( Sorry, but  cars were carp   back  then ) the sub frame was in danger of falling of and the brakes were very illegal.

Things got worse when I bought the dreaded Morris Marina.

My first car was a 1987 Scorp (mk3 Granada) with a 2.4 litre V6. Terrible mpg-figures, but lots and lots of fun  ;D
Incredible engine sound and lots of torque.

Had nearly finished rebuilding the bodywork (lots of rust), when I "parked" it sideways in a pile of snow. That killed the servo system, and so it didn't pass the equivalent of the MOT. Servo system cost about the same as the car, so I scrapped it and got the car I now own, a 1995 2.0 16v Scorp. Mpg-figures are way better, and so is the ride comfort, but.. I still miss the torque and the grunt from the old  2.4... I probably need a cossie  ;)

Only car I've ever sold for a profit!! :D

8 year old Bedford HA ( old Viva front ) in 1976

Really slick gear box for time - shame about rest of it.

However , managed to do over 25k in 3 years with constant "spannering" before it rotted beyond redemption and was replaced by Mk 3 Cortina 2.0GL saloon

1964 :-[ Hillman Imp :-[  Strange car with all the noise happening in the back seats

Engine was a supposed detuned Coventry Climax racing engine, actually not quite that good, in fact was based on an industrial version of that engine used as a fire engine pump.

Head warped if you looked at it funny.

Sunbeam Stilleto had twin Strombergs and was supposed to be a bit quicker but they added the weight of an extra pair of headlamps and a vynyl roof so that slowed it back down. 0-60 in 23ish.

Rootes group I think they were built in Scotland.

First car was an Austin A30. Bought it for £30 and then it cost £10 to insure TPFT. Had so much wrong with it that I was forced to learn how cars worked... never lost the joy of fixing them since. Next was an Austin A35... slightly bigger rear window but still a very small car. Great days, when the roads were clear and few folk on them and a trip across the country was an adventure.... God I'm an old git!!!

And one brown one in your pants.  }{
I wouldn`t mind owning a MK1 again, maybe a 3.0 GTXLR or maybe a 3.0 E, or a Crayford, or a Tickford, Ahem.
If i win the lottery or a long lost relative croaks it and they were filthy rich and i was their favourite nephew or some thing. maybe. :o

Like locky my first car was an Orion (aka the Onion) mk 2 1.6 LX in a nice murcury grey, smartened up with some clear front indicators. Even with some old skool 14" rs alloys it handled like a jelly and started shaking at the sight of a corner. £400 for the car, 2k to insure it, one insurer wanted a mind boggling £11k to insure me, third party only!!  :o

Hi ALL

In 1954 my parents & I purchased our first car: A 1939 Austin 12 (GKJ 490) The 12 being the Horse Power calculated from the RAC Formula. To see how this is arrived at go to:  www.wolfhound.org.uk   The car had been laid up supported by its chassis for almost 6 years.

My Father (He had been a driving instructor in the Army and had kept his pre-war civilian License up to date. No test in those days) he sat with me (I needed L Plates) whilst I got used to the car for the civilian driving test. I was driving in my Army days 6 to 9 years earlier. 1st Regt. RHA. Our horses were 25 Pounder Guns mounted on a modified Sherman Tank. I passed the civilian driving test.

The Austin was a large Limousine, seated 5 with a very small engine. 1500 cc side valve. As all cars then it needed a de-coke annually. Care was needed not to loose the valve collets down into the sump through the oil-ways. My brother and I carried out all maintenance and repairs including replacing King pins & Bushes, these needed reaming inline in situ. After that a Rebore. With the very first MOT introduced I think in 1961. Lights, brakes & steering. It passed the Heath Robinson Performance. See www.motester.co.uk/history.html

1955. Touring Somerset & Devon I Decided against taking it up Porlock Hill so took the long way up “a dirt track in those days” Bad enough trying to hold it coming down with the ROD BRAKES. Countisbury hill down to Lynton and Lynmouth was another tough one for this car. just made it to the top in 2nd gear.

Other notable memories: Touring North Wales in 1956, negotiating the roundabout at Carmarthen Castle the milometer clicked the 100000 miles. In other words Five Zero’s appeared which startled me for a moment.

What price memories? I wish I still had that car now.

I have a photo of the car but cannot get it onto this E-mail.

The Scorpio Ultima which I have had since 1999 is my 11th car. About the best of the bunch although the 1.8 Sierra Auto was a great car.

My first car and first disaster was a P reg Rover 416 (didnt start driving til 25). Got it in spanking condition with low milage on 4 year finance from a main dealer, thinking that it would last me a good while. WRONG..... HGF sorted that one out along with the idiot of a mechanic I had at the time screwing up the first attempt a new HG and having to get it skimmed a second time. This ment that, if it had another HGF, it was a new engine. So, lucky for me I had just went over half way through the finance deal and gave it back to them (in a sort of working condition).
Ahhh.. Them was the days. £35 fill up and an average of 35mpg about town, 45 on a run and 320miles from a tank. Poo car I now know.....
