Title: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad!! Post by Baz on Jun 27th, 2005, 10:33pm Well nearly......Day One. Scorp Count Today = 4: 1 nouveau red estate in Bexleyheath and a black saloon on the M1 and a tourmallard M reg one on the M25. With the Nantucket Grey Saloon in Warrington as we were leaving this morning; quite a good day. (We stopped counting Mondeos at 47,000!!!) We made it to Dover and we are currently in a Premier Lodge just outside the town. Trip down was good with only a few forced diversions due to accidents (sat nav got us round that really well with its "diversion" option as it lets you stipulate a diversion and works out the route for you!!) Car running really well and averaging 24 to the gallon which isn't too bad for UK. Looking for more in France where the Autoroutes aren't as full so less braking and speeding up is necessary. Having all the bushes replaced at the front has made a heck of a difference to the ride quality. I had an incredible squeaking at the front which I thought was the shock absorber but turned out to be one of the bushes. Now it is as quiet as a mouse. My little lad Connor has already mastered the recling rear seat mod and with the headrest screens showing Thomas the Tank Engine and the aircon mod (courtesy of Dave Neale....cheers mate!) the car is more highly equipped than anything else on the road!! Tomorrow at 9am we are on the ferry and off to France so see you tomorrow!! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/scorpatthurrock.jpg If anyone finds this incredibly boring, please tell me and I will stop!! Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Paul B on Jun 27th, 2005, 10:48pm No, you keep it coming Baz. And on your way back home, keep an eye out around Ashford for me. I'm just a short way off the notorious junction 10 of the M20 |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Baz on Jun 27th, 2005, 10:59pm Paul, were you wanting the Cortina power steering rack? |
||||
Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Paul B on Jun 28th, 2005, 6:53am Been giving that some thought Baz but I'm going to pass. I don't really have too much time to be doing the work and really, for the amount I actually drive the car, I think its maybe not worth it. I do also belong to a Cortina forum though, and there could well be someone interested on there. They may even be interested in the whole car :-/ How bad is it? Or, more to the point, do you want to get involved at this late stage? UPDATE: I have mentioned to the Cortina nuts that this car is in a breakers and possibly available, and now I have 3 people interested already. Baz, if you want to retrieve it you could make a few quid. I was looking for that photo you posted of it, but can't find it any more :-/ The questions I've been asked are: Is it a 1.6 or a 2.0? (I reckon it must be a 2-litre if its got power streering), How was the interior? And whats the general bodywork like? Also, what yard is it in? (from a guy in Warrington). |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Baz on Jun 28th, 2005, 10:14pm Day two. Scorpio Count = 2Both in Dover, a Tourmallard green saloon and a left hand drive estate with the country code of just "N" which I have just found out is Norway! We are now at Clermont Ferrand, about 460 miles from Calais. Everything is going well and I am now on my third tank of petrol!! Traffic has been light apart from the periferique which was a bit of a nightmare. Haven't seen any Scorpios or Granadas in France, but not too suprised at that (Have you ever done a search on www.ebay.fr for "Scorpio"? about 3 things turn up!! Hotel is good and has `air con in the rooms which is a bonus and wifi so it only costs me 10euros for 2 hours access instead of £10.00 per meg with my 3g card in europe!! Hotel cahin if anyone is heading to France this year is www.kyriad.fr, not bad rates, 70 euros for 3 of us with breakfast thrown in too!! a bit better than a F1 or Mercure. Tomorrow I should have about 350 miles to do so only one more fill up before we get there!! Todays photo shows the Scorpio at Dover. The wife says it looks pretty meaty and a lot of folks have been staring as we have been belting past them on the peages!! It still motors even with half of dixons on board including an iron and two hairdryers!! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6121.jpg Also, have you ever noticed the mountain on the label of a bottle of Volvic mineral water?? well here it is in real life!! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6150.jpg More tomorrow, hopefully from Argeles-sur-Mer Baz |
||||
Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Baz on Jun 28th, 2005, 10:16pm Paul, I will get the power steering rack kept to one side tomorrow by my mate and will let you know when I get back baz |
||||
Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Paul B on Jun 28th, 2005, 10:29pm Baz... thanks for today's update. Must get some Volvic water tomorrow to check the label ;) Your Cortina... has it been broken already? The thing is, there are a few people (a couple from your area too) interested in the complete car. I'm being bombarded by Cortina fanatics asking all sorts of info about it :o oops! |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Baz on Jun 29th, 2005, 9:57pm Day three. Scorpio Count =1 German Aubergine estate right here on the site!! Looks to be about a 1995/96 Mileage today was about 365 or so. Sat nav got us straight here with no problems and the TMC guidd us around a few slows bits of traffic as well. We arrived at Argeles at about 3:30pm. Weather is pretty good (about 27 degrees) although we did go through the mother of all storms on the way down. The wipers couldn't cope with the amount of water!! Tomorrow, the car needs a wash as there are masses of dead flies stuck to all areas of the front!! Had an english guy ask me today if my car was a new Ford model!! (That made me feel good!!) Tomorrow is a trip to the pool and down to the beach....without the car! Baz |
||||
Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by OddJob on Jun 29th, 2005, 10:30pm Bonjour Baz Enjoyed the trip so far, keep up the good work. Tomorrow chill, relax and ENJOY ;) CADENAS LA VOITURE Mike |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Baz on Jun 30th, 2005, 9:55pm Day 4. Scorpio Count = 0 Bad day for Scorpio spotters!! I did see the same one as I saw yesterday, but that doesn't count really. Had a chilling out day today. Washed the car because it still had the flies graveyard all over the front and went to the pool complex. Only drove into town tonight for some food. Got a few puzzled looks from the locals qu'est que c'est? Un Scorpio? est qu'il un nouveau voiture?? Out tomorrow for a few miles so will try and spot a few more foreign types Baz |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Baz on Jul 3rd, 2005, 8:46pm Day 4 & 5 Scorpio count =0 Two more bad days for scorpio spotters. I reckon they only must have sold 3 in France. Mileage finally popped over to 72000 today! Yesterday a nice trip to Port Vendres. Lovely place but a real plus having the auto box was a real help. The pyranees are a real pain for manual boxes but the views are pretty good over the Med!! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6244Small.jpg This is the Scorpio we saw. Anyone in Germany recognise this one!? http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6174Small.jpg Finally to really upset everyone, had a trip to Canet Plage today and took this picture of an information board on the seafront.......god this is a hard holiday to cope with, the guilt of all this nice weather is almost too much!! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6288Small.jpg Baz Oh, one other picture which is retty good!! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6239Small.jpg Baz |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Baz on Jul 3rd, 2005, 11:00pm Yes he bloody well is!! 12.30 today Connor and myself in the car soaring heat washing the car down and then giving it chamois. Would you believe it? Baz's wife. |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Baz on Jul 3rd, 2005, 11:04pm So there is your answer Tony...straight from the wifes mouth so to speak!! The site we are on has pitched me with a parking space under the biggest most bird attracting tree in France and somewhere they all like to congregate to have a poo on my car so it has to be washed before we go out doesn't it?? Can't have the French thinking we don't look after our cars!! Mind you judging by the state of most of theirs, it wouldn't matter anyway! Baz |
||||
Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by tony on Jul 4th, 2005, 7:21am Well, I washed and polished mine yesterday, it did look nice, but as I live near the sea, and theres lots of seagulls, it's already splattered! Big seagulls too, so big splats! What a conversation....... It's raining just now so hopefully it'll wash them off a bit before we leave this afternoon. |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Baz on Jul 4th, 2005, 9:47pm Day 8 Lost a few days somewhere!! Had a good drive out to Andorra and on the way back to a collection of prehistoric caves. Brilliant if not a bit dangerous getting up and down into them!! Stalactites and stalagmites abound!! No Scorpios today, well not proper ones, saw 2 old mk3 granadas that were well battered and a mk2 granada estate for sale for 1000 euros!! it wasn't worth a 1000 pence! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6440Small.jpg Off out with the scorpio cam tomorrow so hopefully a few more pics if I can find any! Baz En France |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Mike-OddJob on Jul 4th, 2005, 10:32pm Still it's nice to an old Granada around and not in a scrappy, even if it is at the local garage ownerless. Meanwhile when's the next report to be from our lady correspondent Mrs Baz I wounder with the real inside story of the French trip so far LOL ;) Enjoying the trip so far Baz looks nice over there especialy near the Med. Looking forward to the next instalment. Mike |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by 97stateblue on Jul 8th, 2005, 7:08am Hi Baz, excellent diary, I really enjoyed reading it. One of the best family holidays we ever had was in Argeles, introduced my son to Scuba Diving which has since become a passion for him. Keep the pics coming, isn’t technology great (well most of the time). Richard |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Eddie on Jul 8th, 2005, 1:31pm Bonjour Baz, I,m off to Cholet on Monday. Stayed near Argeles a couple times a few years ago in Taxo-Le -Pin. Cracking Holidays on both occasions, had a good laugh at some protesting Farmers dumping 10 tonnes of fruit in the middle of a road junction,just love the French way of doing things. They do speak a bit funny though. Bon Chance. The Scorpio looks stunning. eddie |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Baz on Jul 8th, 2005, 10:30pm Day 12. Scorpio Count = 1 THATS RIGHT...I FINALLY SAW A FRENCH SCORPIO!! On the outskirts of Elne. A petrol blue saloon probably about a 1995/96 model. Had ultima teardrops. The guy looked over knowingly!! We had a good 300km round trip to Cap D'Agde today to go to Toon Land which isn't a Newcastle based theme park, but one based on cartoons! Great day out where everything is kiddy orientated apart from a section where you get free water bomb baloons and are allowed to fire them at other people using giant catapults!! BRILLIANT!! A few pictures now taken near a town called Lucerne which has a fantastic causeway between the Med and an inland lake and makes for a few dramatic looking pictures as the clouds roll in off the Pyranees! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6677Small.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6676Small.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6675Small.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6674Small.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6673Small.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6672Small.jpg Only 5 days left before we start to head for home.... |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Baz on Jul 9th, 2005, 6:35pm Day 13 Scorpio Count Today = 1 A Belgian Scorpio estate in Tourmallard; half way up a mountain between France and Spain!! We were a bit bored this morning so we decided to have a spin up the mountain roads that lead from France into Spain and run alongside the Med. So fabulous scenery but thank god I have an auto as the amount of gear changes would drive my left foot numb!! We had just rounded a bend on the way up yet another section of mountain, when the other Scorpio came round the bend in front of us; going down. So, quick thinking, I pulled over, got the camera and went to the edge of the cliff bit waiting for it to come into view further down the mountain so I could take a picture!! It never did, but Karen suggested they had stopped at the photo stop about 1/2 mile back. We spun round and went to have a look and there it was!! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6692Small.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6694Small.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6696Small.jpg It looked a bit well worn with a bit of rust on the tail and quite a few dents and bangs but that seems to be the case over here. Also today I had a run in with an old guy on a BMW motor bike with them stupid black boxes on the back. He cut in behind my car and was trying to come up the inside when he hit my bumper. I swerved immediately and cut him off so he couldn't drive off and jumped out of the car ready to smack him one. He was an old guy with his wife on the back and after seeing that he had only scuffed some black onto my paint and not damaged anything, I felt sorry for him cos he was only little and was suddenly confronted with a lot bigger bloke screaming swear words at him in French and English for all I was worth!! I let him go in the end but it only strengthened my belief that motorbikes should be fitted with stabilizers so they have to queue up like the rest of us instead of weaving in and out causing damage as they go. Either that or ban them altogether!! Off to town tonight on a little train that passes the camp for a few beers as it is our anniversary tomorrow morning!! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/DSCF6697Small.jpg One last picture of the mountain esate as it passed mine on its way out of the car park. Check out the mountains around here!! Baz |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by Baz on Jul 16th, 2005, 12:26am Thanks Ren. Total mileage was 3,234 or so!! As for the fuel bill, I stopped counting. However I did discover that fuel in France averages 86p a litre, fuel in Spain is about 66p a litre. Well worth the 24 mile round trip to fill up!! This was a picture I took near the Eiffel Tower. (Obviously this has been faked as the tower is actually not in a petrol station at all!!) http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y147/Bazunitec/eiffel.jpg Bit of a return of the old rad problem on the way back though. New rad, thermostat, bottle and cap before I went, everything hunky dorey right up to the queue for the boat at Calais when I noticed a trickle of water that wasn't the right colour. Opened the bonnet and the water had all but gone!! It was a long drive home having to fill up the water tank every other service station!! Will have a closer look tomorrow but this could mean that Sherlock may have been wrong after all Eric!! Baz |

Car was excellent, never missed a beat, mileometer passed 155,000 on the journey too. Enjoyed this write up, this should become a regular feature as Scorpio owners travel further afield! Tony |

Title: Re: A Scorpio in France. A diary of a trip abroad! Post by tony on Jul 26th, 2005, 11:43am Hi Baz, We booked everything independently, the cheapest way to go. We figured every penny we saved getting there and staying left us more to spend in Disney and Paris, and on duty free homeward bound! Hotel Premiere Classe at Bussy Saint George booked through Expedia, room for family of four (a new hotel, basic, but clean, and just somewhere to sleep) £134 for FOUR nights! Basic breakfast available for 4 euros per person, but we were up and out early so just ate in Paris, or at Disney. Hotel is less than ten minutes walk to the train station and then a few minutes to Disney, or about 30 minutes to the centre of Paris. We drove to Disney for the convenience, it only takes about ten minutes. Tickets we bought from Disney shop in Dundee, 3 adult, 1 child, two days, £188.00. (not hopper tickets, but that wasn't important as we planned to spend a day in each park for a taste of each. Longer hopper tickets work out cheaper overall per day. Ferry booked online - Speedferries - Dover-Boulogne from £19.00 to £59.00 (We paid £29 outward and £19 on the return) We even booked bus tours and a boat trip down the Seine in Paris online, booked our cottage in Normandy privately (also found online) If you want to know more just let me know. We're thinking about going back to Paris for a week in October because there's so much to see there. We found a deal with Expedia, four of us in a two roomed aparthotel, flying from Edinbugh to CDG, it was a little over £800. (Then my wife found a 10 day holiday to Los Angeles for £1200 for four - so don't know what to do really!) Tony |
